Alternative fuels

I worked out I used 15 quids worth of diesel on a lamping session sunday night. My local garage in the village was £1.07 a litre for diesel this morning.

I think a lot of us would benefit from any members on here who are running their vehicles on alternative fuels.

I am told a few people have had good success with refined vegetable oil as well as straight veg oil and Kerosene (heating oil).

Some input from any mechanics would also be good as well to let us know of any possible side effects on engines too. I have had mixed reports from some saying a straight vegetable oil eventually naffs your fuel pump together with waxing up problems in winter.

Is anyone refining used vegetable oil also?

I am also told you can run on all this legally providing you declare to customs and excise your useage and pay the duty. I know there has been one or two posts on this subject but questions and answers really need rolling into one.

dont exceed a 50/50 mix as the diesel is still required to lube the injection pump and in really cold conditions go for a 65/35 diesel/oil mix otherwise its to thick to get pulled through the pump. I wouldn't risk it in a modern diesel (electronic direct injection) though as they are to well refined to run on anything other than pre diesel. The conventional (mechanical injector pump )will be fine though so if you can get old oil all you need to do is run it through some paint filters (type used in body repair shops) As these are cheaper than buying the 100 micron filters then just run your fuel low and when you put 20l of fuel in you can then put 5l of veg oil also. First see how it runs on a smaller scale before working up to the 50% mix. If you never fill your tank more than half full initially you can allway add more diesel to dilute the mix if you find your vehicle doesn't like the mix.

Good Call starlight - the price of diesel has got too high and i also need an alterative - at the rate its going, it would be just as cheap to run a petrol 4x4

Well lets face it- to maintain our shooting is not for nothing. It actually costs us all a lot more than we realize.

Only a few of us on here are fortunate enough to get cartridges and ammunition supplied, let alone fuel costs.

It is prehaps the wrong thing to say but to many of us who really go out for the 'proper job' in vermin control are stoning big costs along the way. £1.00+++ for fuel £1.00+++ a round for bullets-£150.00 a thousand for cartridges etc.

So when people say to me 'Cor, I want to get into that what you do'- I make sure they know what it is gonna cost them..........

I totally agree, it costs nearly £15 - £20 just to go out for a fox now, if you factor in the amount of milage you have to do, while you drive around an estate lamping to find them and thats before i fire a shot.

but its our hobby/pastime/Job so i suppose we are just going to have to bend over and take it :good:

I'd avoid using central heating oil as thats definitely going to get you in trouble if caught. The cheapest option is to have a diesel 4x4 used solely off road and use red diesel in it and buy it from the farmer. After that you can use a veg oil mix, personally I'm quite glad I hide my diesel through the company so costs not a lot at all.
