Downforce
Hi I'm considering selling my 1897 which I bought a couple of years back as an investment as well as always wanting one. I will post pictures asap but it’s in good condition for its age serial number dates to 1907 and has a clean unpitted bore. I’m not looking to sell quickly at a knock down price so am listing at £2500 and whilst I might consider offers but in my experience there’s often a shortage of supply particularly of nice ones! If I have no issues keeping the shotgun if it pans out that way but would very much appreciate it going to a collector that can enjoy the quality and engineering of this very early piece of history, at roughly 117 years old! For those that don't know the M97/1897 its got a rich history and was used as a trench warfare firearm - please check out some vids on the interweb. Key features are the external cocking hammer that can be manually released to put the gun into a loaded "safe" condition plus it's capable of slam firing. Wood is in very good condition and although not perfect it is extremely unmarked for a 100 year old shotgun. Photos added - as you can see wood is in excellent condition and barrel is very clean and shiny If anyone wants any hi-re pictures of any particular parts please PM me and provide a WhatsApp number I can send up close pictures Yes it has a hammer and when cocked the hammer is rearwards and can be manually released and kept loaded Paul Harrell has a big section on it on his youtube channel (search Paul Harrell Winchester Model 1897 Shotgun-Revised)

theshootist
A lovely gun. Is the take down still functional?

My understanding is that by the very nature of the 1897 magazine removal being part of the take-down this is not permitted on a Sect2/SGC gun just a S1/FAC. I may be wrong and I'm happy for anyone that knows better to comment (as long as we don't go down a rabbit hole 🤐 )

It comes down to the Proofmaster's interpretation of the legislation. The Birmingham proof House has certainly proofed a number of take down guns where the magazine stays attached to the barrel.
