Conor O'Gorman Posted July 25 Report Share Posted July 25 A new training programme for firearms enquiry officers which BASC helped to develop was launched at a meeting of the College of Policing this week. As a key stakeholder, BASC was invited to attend the launch, alongside representatives from 41 of the UK’s police forces’ firearms licensing departments and other shooting organisations. BASC played a significant role in developing the new course, working closely with the British Shooting Sports Council (BSSC), with the aim of ensuring professional competence amongst firearms enquiry officers (FEOs) and to achieve consistent good practice across the forces. In helping to develop the programme, BASC contributed to the structure of a number of the training outputs. The launch event also offered the opportunity for BASC’s head of firearms, Martin Parker, to meet many of the heads of licensing departments and discuss current issues. Mr Parker said: “BASC very much welcomes the introduction of the course and we’ve played a significant role in developing aspects of the training programme, including familiarisation with the different shooting disciplines, handling and making safe commonly encountered firearms and the opportunity to shoot both shotguns and rifles. “We look forward to continuing to assist with the development of the course and we remain committed to the delivery of the subsequent training. All 41 FLDs were invited as per OP. I don't know who attended as I was not there, and if I did know I would not be publishing a roll call. As for Durham, during BASC's PCC elections campaign no replies was received from the elected PCC for Durham Joy Allen. Perhaps write to her, as a local resident, asking her to ensure adequate resources are given to firearms licensing and setting up an independent advisory group as per BASC's campaign. You could also contact the Police and Crime Panel and ask for firearms licensing to be put on the agenda of next meeting (19 September): https://www.durham.gov.uk/policeandcrimepanel Let us know how you get on. HantsRob Posted July 27 Report Share Posted July 27 41/45 attended? Whilst I am curious as to who didn't attend, I think that's an excellent turnout. Standardisation can bring "delays" to forces that then have to do more checks and diligence, but having a unfiied approach that's fair where FEOs all have the same knowledge is a step in the right direction. It will stop variances and should ensure fairness to all. Another good PR news story for BASC, and I wish everyone that attended all the best for turning this into best practice for a better shooting community.
