First rape stubble!

Recommended Posts

Managed to find a free afternoon today and having a few options where I knew there would be some pigeons decided to check out a field I’d not looked at, but the farmer had told me late last week that there was a huge number of pigeons on a field of rape when he was cutting it so that was first port of call.
On arrival there was a lot of pigeons on the ground and flighting. Driving round the whole field put up a lot of pigeons but they were all over it really so deciding where to get was a bit of a conundrum, the field being 90 acres.
The decision made eventually after thinking about a hide out in the middle, deciding to site the hide under a tree where there would be shade all afternoon with the wind almost at my back, and I was in position at 14:30.
Dad didn’t want to shoot or sit in the hide so parked the truck in the middle of the field to watch, which did help massively channel the birds up to where I was.
I had no dead birds so just decoys to start, but in ten minutes had 10 down which I set up on cradles, with two on the magnet.
The next two hours were hectic, with a lot of traffic and a lot of birds on the deck.
The following two slowed up slightly but still gave me a steady flow of birds right up until I finished, with some great flighting shots as well as the odd decoying bird.
At 18:30 I shot the last pigeon and began the pick up.
The clicker showed 201 and I picked 197, a few in the undergrowth behind I couldn’t pick.
A wonderful unexpected red letter afternoon, which I enjoyed immensely!

Hello, Well done Dave, Did you manage to sell all the pigeons ??

Delivered the pigeons once I’d dropped all the kit (and Dad) off. This particular outlet is a non paying one, he does all the work and sells the breasts vacuum packed to a game dealer and I’m happy to be able to get rid of them. He’s also a very keen pigeon shooter and had shot a similar number yesterday so had nigh on 400 to deal with!

Very well done that’s some real good shooting in 4 hrs guessing you’re eye was well in that day 👍had a few 100 plus bags over the years none that big though. Last field I shot a 100 bag on has a new school built on it now 😟

It was plenty busy enough yes, hot barrels at times and I did shoot pretty straight with plenty of doubles…..the pigeons weren’t jinking or flaring very often which made longer shots much easier to hit consistently.
It’s a shame when good fields go to building etc, assuming you’re still going on a regular basis you never know when the next red letter day may be round the corner 😁

Your Bagging one or two lately  that's a  very busy session to get a double hundred in that time

Had a really good June/July shooting just over 1000 in 9 afternoon sessions which is unusually good for me/my area. More than enough to deal with, I don’t think I’d want to shoot the 3/4/500 bird days regularly even if I could as I wouldn’t be able to get rid of them!
