Stew and Dumplings

Not the most photogenic dish I’ve ever produced, but this was pretty special.  With a view to getting him self sufficient, we’ve got my 15 year old son taking care of catering for tea one night a week. It wasn’t his turn to cook tonight, but as I was making stew, I thought it was time he learned to make dumplings.   When I was a kid, once a week, my mum would put the makings of a stew in the oven with it on timer before she left for work, when I got home from school, it was my job to make the dumplings and add them to the stew so everything was cooked by the time my folks got home from work.  At first my mum would leave the dry ingredients measured out in a bowl but it wasn’t long before I could ‘eyeball’ them myself and make a decent dumpling.  I showed my boy the eyeball method, and then how it’s important to make sure you gently place them in the stew and also, towards the end, you glaze them with a splash of gravy, just like my mum taught me.  I have to say, he did a very good job, and although she died maybe 20 years before he was born, I’m absolutely positive that they’d get his granny’s approval.

anything with dumplings is good...and some colemans mustard

I’m afraid I have to go grainy and French - Coleman’s is too cheeky for my taste!

Looks very good, is it a practice for the winter?

Thanks, it definitely felt like winter here in the Dales yesterday!  I'm using up venison to make room in my freezer for my next stalking trip to Scotland once the Hinds are in season.
