When I found out I thought this rather ironic as I was recently talking about this in another thread.
The biggest town nearest to me is Penrith, a mere 8 miles away, and I know it well, having see it change grow and spread immensely ever since I can recall.
Anyhow, the number of houses which have been built in the last 10 years has amazed everyone, and not just in the town but in all the outlying villages I can think of, and it’s still ongoing, including a huge development on a local flood plain right next to the M6. Be interesting to see how that pans out!
Our local garage is overwhelmed with business due to the growth, and with most households having more than one car you now have to book well in advance for services, MOT’s etc.

Penrith has a Morrisons, Booths, Aldi, Home Bargains, Iceland, M&S, Sainsburys and two B & M’s. Oh, and a Spar; the Co-op closing due to competition some years ago.
There have been many calls for another school and another GP’s surgery as the small hospital is rather swamped, but guess what we’re getting, right on the edge of the newest development? Yes! A Tesco!
Every little helps! 👍

People will call that PROGRESS, but it fails to address the necessary bits, like you say GP's surgeries and schools as well as all the other infrastructure desperately needed.

Here in Peterborough, building firms buy land and get planning permission by telling the council they will include lots of smaller houses and the very infrastructure required.

Then as soon as the building work starts they go back to the council to renegotiate the figures and every time so far the council have allowed the changes.

SHOCKING..............................

When I was working in MK every acre produced £4m. Of this £2m went to schools, buses, doctors, roads etc. Each development had a requirement for social and affordable housing spread within it. LA's are supposed to do this across the country but it's not so easy when dealing with small developers and small developments. Too many competing priorities.

Hello, Tesco seem to think they can Bulldoze their way in Communities giving no thought to the Citizens or Area, And likely giving a golden hand shake to planners and local Councils, Look what happen on one of Scotland Islands reference Sunday opening, I know a lot of families find it cheaper using a club card but how can Tesco justify the price rises that has been ongoing since Covid , Do they pay the Supplier more ?? , I like my hot cross buns, Tesco now 6 for £1 ,30p , from a £ 1  that was over the weekend, from now on i shall be getting minimum shopping at Tesco and more in Lidl 😄

You missed out 'Yorkshire Trading'   😂

We are undergoing a similar transformation.  Most of my shooting ground lost to new builds, and the bits that remain are too dangerous to shoot. My biggest gripe has been the massive drop in water pressure. It has been so bad that I contacted UU to check it. Guy came out took pressure readings from an outside tap, nope, all OK. It is within the minimum working pressure, and nothing to do with another new build estate, 1/2 mile away  ?  I worry about the long term effects on my combi boiler because that can not be replaced either   🙄

Progress hey  !  Where would we be without it  ?

Same here in south Norfolk with same looking houses going up fast around towns and villages. GP surgeries are struggling to cope with the additional population, schools, hospitals and other essential services likewise.

The development sprawl means neighbouring towns are growing ever closer and will surely join into one mass of ticky tacky boxes each with two or more vehicles on their drives.

I did mention this very subject a while back with the countryside shrinking at an alarming rate to development , if that wasn't bad enough then we are now losing 1000s of acres to solar panels , only last week it was reported that another 2000 + acre block was going to be solar panels , with us living on the coast you will soon have to go well inland to find some countryside , thankfully not in my time but that is how it will be .    MM

Our little village is being developed to within an inch of its life, fields turned into a housing estate, every little gap built on, i have a developer who comes round to me every 2 or 3 years asking if I want to sell my property and land, I only have a few acres not big by any means but no doubt a fair few houses could go on it. I have no intention of selling in my life time, my daughter and her family will live here once I’ve gone ,inheritance Tax permitting.

the pressure drop is deliberate, it reduces the leakage.  Therefore UU can report the reduction, hit their ODI and claim a financial reward all without fixing any leaks.

Only works up to a point, when the whole of the area is at minimum pressure they have no option other than to start digging..

new developments impact sewers much more than they do supply.

Good for you.
Amazing how many in a similar situation who would sell and be wealthy but live in one of the little boxes in their old garden because they don’t want to leave the village.

Round us in the Midlands it's a Greenfield building free for all while brownfield sites stand derelict because it costs the house builders too much profit to build on them.

Thousands of ugly, cheaply designed and shoddily built red brick boxes crammed on top of one another to maximise every drop of profit from the land.

The local councils very often deny planning permission only for the housebuilders to exercise their corrupt backhanders to central government and get it granted on appeal.

It boils my pee.

Bishop Auckland in Co Durham has them all plus a few more besides most are out of town  but it has  grippled the town centre  plus  family run business once the town had two markets a week   on a Thursday and a Saturday with the Saturday one gone by open  till 7 pm with the  gas lighting. The only advantage  is the competition result  that the petrol is the cheapest in the area

I am well aware of that. 2 days after UU attended,  the pressure is up slightly.  I also took the poor guy to task over the lead piping that er.....'doesn't exist' ! He did his best to toe the party line, but as an ex gasfitter and plumber I have probably 'eaten' more lead than the average person, and certainly more than this young man had ever seen. I am pushing 80 and still going  😂
