no idea, but Im planning to drive an untaxed car next week as I am buying it with no tax - I'm hoping that the fact that I have bought it and have a receipt for it will be a good enough excuse!

It probably depends on what kind of car/person it is - they can probably figure out which ones are genuine mistakes and which ones are repeat offenders with no insurance/mot either

You can buy a car un-taxed from a trader if you have a valid excuse as to why you could not get tax. i.e it was a sunday that you purchased it, you get a days grace.

However, if you know you are collecting the car you should make reasonable effort to ask the trader to tax it for you before you collect it at your cost, the same applies if you buy private, you should contact the seller and ask them to tax it and you will re-emburse them.

Lets just hope you are not collecting it un-insured too.

I can assure you it will be insured, and MOT'd too :P

I cannot get the seller to tax it as he does not have insurance for the vehicle - it was trailered to the MOT tester and trailered home again.

I am planning to drive it home, put it on my drive and leave it there until I have all my documents through, and then get it taxed.

I guess if I get pulled its going to depend on weather I get a reasonable, discretionary copper or a miserable one!

In that case when you pick it up take your insurance documents and you will receive the new keeper supplement and the MOT certificate from the seller so just go to the post office and tax it :P

Even better would be to go and do the deal and get the docs, then go to the post office, get tax and come back to collect the car. YOu will have no bother then

not a certain buy yet so I dont want to take out an insurance policy before I pick it up - I will be driving it home on DayInsure, provided by Norwich Union. but as its only temporary insurance, the post office does not accept the certificate that you print as proof of a full insurance policy.

waiting to get the car is good, but its a 3 hour drive away so I dont really fancy going, coming back, going, coming back again.

Most officers I have spoken too (including a couple of traffic officers) say that they wouldnt prosecute providing the car had just been bought on the day and this could be proven by way of a receipt.

I already pay tax on another vehicle and enough bloody fuel duty! I have done it before, and plenty of people I know (as I use a lot of car forums) have done it with no bother.

When I bought our car I part ex'd our old one and drove the new one away (no tax and unable to get one until the cover note came through). Woke up the very next day after a night shift to find a ticket on the window. Phoned and explained but got nowhere and paid the subsequent fine. Lesson learnt - and would love to know which SPACEDOCKER neighbour phoned the council :P

In reality if you have a valid reason like collecting a newly purchased car , On the whole common sense would normally prevail

with the police that is the dvla on the other hand or an entirely different story no leeway bang a fine and forced to backdate !!!!

As normally You would be taxing the car and generally speeching backdating to the beginning of the month the police go easy on ya ..

In general they only crush "uninsured" cars or occasionally untaxed if there clamped and then the fine is not paid ...

You can legally drive to a mot station for a prearranged mot test and to a garage to have mot work undertaken with no mot or tax !!!!

in the case of collecting newly purchased cars i would think .....

the police person would prob like to see the documents showing you had just collected car however as both you and the seller have to sign and date the v5 which you would obviously be in the car if you ..... so no probs there then

I used Quite recently , to personally drive on major roads and motorways with no mot no tax and no UK v5 on freshly imported cars LEGALLY !!

The law allows this....

Your actually allowed to take the car from port of discharge to your destination , then also to a mot station and also the to SVA center if required all without number plates !!!

The local police in the port area never even gave you a second look in fact you have to book out @ a police maned check point !!

On the way home What speed cam :P

i had hugely expensive trade insurance , on the odd occasion i would be stoped they would pnc the chassis number and i came back no trace verifying

the fact the cars not UK reg and let me go on !!!

The £15 tax disk got nicked a few times from my motorbike so in the end I didn't bother, about 19 months later I go out and my bikes gone!!!!!

I ring the police and they tell me it had been impounded for no tax, I ring the lot and after arguing how long they have had it for as they tried to add a day on I go to pick it up and am handed a bill for about £365 :P

After sorting the cash as they would not accept any other form of payment and grabbing the bike I find that they have snapped the throttle cable while lifting it onto the lorry, a dirty trick in-case you don't have an mot and can't claim £100 back for taxing the motor within 7 days.

I leave the bike with them who happily look after it for an extra night free of charge, manage to get a cable delivered for the next day and replaced, get the current tax disc and backdate it, go back down to the pound and am given a cheque for the £100.

In court I get £20 fine and £15 charges, I thank them and let the DVLA chap know exactly what I thought of the subcontractors, From dogs and kids in school uniform running around the office while trying to sort out your business to the basteds playing football around peoples motors and they have the cheek to charge me the same ground payment to sit the bike on a bit of shingle as a car.

The **** even had peoples boats just sat on the floor.

Pay the tax; it’s worth it just to lessen the chance of having to deal with these sorts of scumbags

That was a few years ago and apparently they are going to really crack down on it because the insurers are trying to back out of claims.

Councils are allowed to fine people for no tax if they find untaxed cars in car parks etc. Its not part of DVLA fines system, just a bit of extra sport for councils to exploit.

This reminds me, I left my vehicle which is excempt from road tax in a car park.

Being a forestry commission vehicle and clearly marked out on the tax disc holder saying it was excempt, came back from the shop after getting something to eat to find a ticket on my windscreen, £60 fine, so I phoned them up to say that it was excempt from tax and they said only agricultural vehicles are excempt, so after explaining a little more they said they will send me a letter, in which it was explaing which vehicles were excempt from tax one of them being government vehicles, so I gave this to my boss and he sorted it out.

It turned out to be that they thought it was an agricultural vehicle, in which that rule of not going further than two miles or something from the farm is ok but parking an agricultural vehicle in a public space was different.

Its all sorted now
