new to the flock
Well I had to take a stroll out through the corn field to the woods to check a couple of coon traps on the off chance that they had been out and moving last night. So I decided to take the 20 guage and my English Setter, Toad, with me in hopes of a late season grouse.....or two. Well we headed off through the corn stubble and Toad goes on point.....as I circle in up rises a pair of cock guineas so with the dog locked and steady to wing shot and fall I shot a very nice left and right . Once the birds were tucked into the game vest off we set again. We just arrived at the edge of the willow swamp when again the dog locks up. This is looking good for a grouse when up goes another cock guinea, which folded very nicely on a straight away shot. Sent the dog and tucked that one into the vest after being delivered back to me by a very happy Toad dog. We then carried on to the woods, checked traps and searched for a grouse or a bunny but came up empty. Oh well was a great start to a new year with 3 very cleanly pointed/shot birds, and a dog which stayed steady to wing shot and fall. Cranfield
Are these wild guinea fowl, or do you release some ?
new to the flock
I would say it is more a case of they released themselves NTTF
Cranfield
I wondered, as we release some on our Shoot, mainly to act as watchbirds for the pheasants. However, they don't present sporting shots, they just fly up into the trees and flap from branch to branch. I have never seen them presented properly for shooting. I adore the red and english variety,...and think they are a highly underated gundog here in the UK......dont seem alot if people working them. I once watch a falconer working moorland with a setter on grouse and hare.......and I was very, very impressed. Would love to see some pictures if you have any
