ME
We were sitting there last night and my mate said "who decided (and when) that Australia would have their New Years Eve before us - rather than after us". I didnt loose any sleep about it and can't be bothered to Google it - so anyone come up with an answer ?

Due to the direction that the earth rotates anywhere west of the line is behind us in time and anywhere to the east is in front of us. Zapp
Its because the International Date Line (the line exactly opposite the Greenwich Meridian in terms of longitude) runs through the pacific ocean. Therefore, it is always 'tomorrow' in Oz before it is here, unless the world starts spinning in the opposite direction.. ZB
ME
unless the world starts spinning in the opposite direction.. you have to wonder if it does on PW sometimes !!!!
Floating Chamber
All this 15 degrees of longitude = 1 hour is nonsense! I ask you, how can you telephone someone today when it's tomorrow for them? They'd be out. They are just impatient and want to be the first. They do it EVERY year!
