ME
I was talking to Pin yesterday about his Pajero shooting wagon and now I really fancy one. I have been trawling 4x4 sites / Ebay & Autotrader for a while now as I fancy a new toy. I will use the vehicle just for Green Laneing, Fording, Off Road courses and to go to shoots. I am a novice at all this so dont want to spent massive bucks....at the moment..... So my questions - 1) Short or Long base ? 2) Landy vs something Jap ? 3) Which 4x4 are the "friendliest" for modding i.e. raising the suspension, adding a winch, snorkel etc ? 4) Any 4x4s to avoid ? - I have heard that Jeep parts are expensive for example. Your views would be appreciated... Cheers Matt Edited January 27, 2008 by LV

pumpitup
Got a Toyota Hilux Double cab myself, but it cost a bit more than your budget is allowing. Only advice i can give is ask a mechanic friend (if you have one) to go with and check over whatever you find.
J@mes
are you an expert DIY mechanic? Yes: Landy No: something else. there seems to be plenty of SWB Shoguns about for around £1k, i expect the higher end of your budget would get you a resonably good one! kdubya
jap jap jap? this has had some serious use off road, totally standard, fit a snorkel and you would need scuaba gear to justify it? will probably go through more than I dare try, often axle deep but through it she goes, comfortable to drive air conditioning sunroof fairly quiet, no rust, flys through a test and starts 1st time every time owes me absolutely NOWT, unlike most landys IE overpriced poorly engineered rust buckets that are bought for the badge rather than sense? oh and i can get 5 people in with ALL their gear and they all sit in SEATS] facing forward not on wheel wells or planks cheers KW

J@mes
I wouldnt get a landy unless you have a serious tool kit, a welder and a pair of overalls. my old man spent all his time repairing the one he had, my workmate seems to spend every weekend fixing his! tulkyuk
LV, buy a mitzi or toyota and you wont go far wrong with either - I drive a Mitsubishi shogun sport and like KW , its been everywher from very evry muddy fields to a couple of feet deep in snow and it don't get stuck - i had it up to the axles one night out with Magman and we still got her out without a tow!!! One the same spec and year as mine maybe a little out of your budget, but you will be able to buy an older one for the amount you state - they were called a mitsubishi challenger on the older models ( pre Y reg) here she is in all her glory

webber
LV If you visit the forum look for posts by webber, you will see what he thinks about Land Rovers. For absolute adaptability, it has to be Landy, but that comes with the unreliable price tag. Reliability comes with the Japs. Our small shoot has run a Vitara for 2 seasons. The only thing that we did was dump the standard road tyres and fitted some of webber's cast offs. Due to their light weight the Vitara is excellent off road. webber

We used to hold a load of our races there too. Done a tonne of repair work up there also. Awesome place! I didn't know dave allowed shooting there. Is it a case of keep quiet or does he encourage it? We lost it as a venue last year due to a noise complaint from a neighbour.

FBF
that G wagon would be worth a look. hold its value well too.. persoanlly i like the yank 4x4's... blazers, broncos, rangers, plenty of choice cheap for parts the only downside is the fuel milage... but oh boy do they have power
