Spaniel
I have used the one from the shore and to be honest did not think much of it.....
TPR1966
Yes I've heard the ones from the shore are not worth it. There is no substitute for decent quality fresh Lug Here is some of mine. £2.50 for 10 fresh
auto culto
dont buy cheap, you will need to spend around 200 to get a usable unit and that is bottom end price. o for a brand like Lowrance and get a wide transducer and the largest screen you can. A narrow transducer will be next to useless

digger
I went out last year on my mates boat, we launched from a port near Brighton. It was an appalling day, as we went out all the charter boats were coming back in. We used his £350 fish finder and sat for two hours over shoals of fish without a bite. We moved into the lee of the harbour wall and again it showed masses of fish with no bite. When we gave it up and got the boat out and on to the trailer I noticed he had left the finder on. Fifty feet from the sea it was still showing fish beneath the boat Best bet for reveiws is Boat Fishing Monthly
Cranfield
maks2408, it really does depend what sort of fishfinder you are looking for, as to what recommendations you will get. Will it be fitted on a boat, or is it one for freshwater that you cast into the lake ? digger, those "shoals of fish" can be weed and the machine needs fine tuning to tell the difference. From what you describe, it does sound as though it wasn't tuned it properly.

Blackpowder
For a boat get the best you can afford. After 20 years in the potting and charter angling job I would say equally important is practice with whatever model you choose. If for example you are among fish, lay down the rod and get tuning the set to see waht is the best possible picture you can gey of what is happening on the sea bed. IMHO fish feeding on the bottom are much more difficult to locate on a sounder than mid -water feeders. Best of luck with your purchase Blackpowder
