Cranfield
Looking at guntrader.co.uk, that seems about the going price for a secondhand 897L. Its difficult to be precise, so much depends on the condition of the individual guns.
TX Sniper
sounds fair, but check the barrels for pitting, the wood to metal fit (should be tight), the bluing and last but not least the fit of the gun.

deadeye
i have the beretta 687 silver pigeon II sporting in both 12 ga and 20 ga. and i like them alot. i have always been of the opinion that you get alot of gun for your money in the beretta 600 series. the other day i shot sporting clays in the rain. the beretta is easy to fully take apart. the ejectors easily pop out and if you obtain a beretta stock wrench it is very easy to remove the stock from the receiver from time to time to clean and maintain the gun. in other words you can thoroughly clean it and maintain it with great simplicity. another beretta advantage is that if you shoot alot the gun is more easily rebuildable than some other brands. the hinge disks and the locking studs can be replace as they are made with that end in mind. i talked with mark cole who is a gunsmith specializing in beretta guns in the state of maine in the u.s.. and he told me that he has never personally seen a beretta 600 series receiver that was completely worn out. you can't prove it by me---thats just what he said. for me, it fits like a glove which of course is of the most important thing. naturally that might or might not be the case for you. just my take on it. i would shop the price before making my decision. merry christmas.
