OK bought one of these the other day the guy in the shop said it is proofed for steel shot, looking in the booklet it says

(do not use steel shot carts) (it can handle standard steel shot ONLY as defined by the C.I.P.

for high performance steel shot only use a gun that has been specifically tested for steel shot.

now I'm slightly confused, whats the difference between standard steel shot and high performance? surly steel shot is steel shot

Hi mate, i too have a winchester (OU) and they are now all proved to high performance steel loads. Check on the barrel to make sure it has a symbol below (it will just be the symbol in middle of the circle):

High performance steel is pressured at 1370bar, standard is 1050 i think. Dont user any more than 1/2 choke, i find quarter the best as steel paterns tight anyway

High performance steel shot is Heavy loads generally found in Magnum cartridges. Standard steel shot is light loads i.e. 21, 24, 28 grams etc. High performance generates more pressure than an ordinary Lead Magnum cartridge so require proofing to a high level to ensure they're safe to use. Standard steel shot does not produce as high pressure, so a high level of proof is not required.

If you want piece of mind then get onto the manufactures web site and get the spec of the gun. You should find what the barrels are proofed too (My Escort is 1200 kg / cm² or 17160 lb. per square inch). Try this web site if you need to convert any values to Bars for example: http://www.onlineconversion.com/pressure.htm

With these values in mind check out the specs on the box of the next set of steel loads that you want to buy. Job done.

If anyone has a box of HeviShot and a box of standard would they mind scanning in or copying specs off the box so we can all see the difference (if any).

  • 11 years later...

I have recently purchased a Winchester X3 semi auto.

Can anyone give some help regarding steel shot size for geese.

I have been using Winchester Blind Side 3” 1 3/8oz No 3 with 1/4 chock fitted with reasonable success up 40 yard. Geese 45-50 yds I am experiencing poor results. I feel this more to do with the cartridge rather than my poor shooting.

Any advice regarding loads, shot size & choke would be appreciated.

peter
