Macnab
I've done a search on PW and read all the stuff I can find but there seem to have been some changes to some parts of the syllabus (hygiene, deer legal calibres etc) in the last couple of years. Even though I have gone down the mentoring route for my deer calibre I want to cover all the angles so I have signed up for a DSC1 in early 2009 with the BASC and they are sending me the coursebook, but would those who have recently done the course recommend any other books/DVDs/info which may be helpful? Thanks for your help. M
sandersj89
I got mine back in the spring, went up to Dumfries to do it with Ronnie Rose. Fantastic weekend other than the damage to my rifle case by BA handlers on the flights. Tips, well get your hands on the manual and read it and re read it. It is not that hard and will set you well on the way. Everything you need to know is there and if you can read through a few times you will have most of the ground work covered. Get the Deer Quest CD, not sure if there is an upto date version covering recent legislation changes but run it and sit the tests in your own time, I would do 50 to 100 questions a night and you will soon identify areas you need to concentrate on. See if you can also borrow a copy of the Deer Species of the UK DVD, this will help a great deal on the ID section of the assesment. Shooting test, practice the three shooting posistions. I did live firing practice and also simulated with a rifle and no bolt in the house. Prone shots are not a problem but you need to get used to shooting of sticks whilst standing and kneeling if you are not already used to it. On the course ask questions and listen closely, they want you to pass and will point you in the right direction. And finally, enjoy it. It is a great way to spend the weekend and you will pass I am sure. Jerry
Macnab
Thanks Jerry. That all sounds like good advice and I will start working on it now. Your post about doing your DSC1 in Scotland showed up on my search and was very useful - luckily I will be able to drive to my test site so no BA blokes stamping on my rifle case and chucking it down chutes. Thanks again. M
AndyCM
I read the manual and then made a point of learning any unfamiliar terms like Zoonosis Embryonic diapause Hummel Keds Menil Menalistic Hock gland Keds Spellers + loads more I found various websites helpful BDS BASC Deer Initiative (just be careful you know if the website is mainly the England / Scotland / NI regions so the differences don't confuse) Also, going through old magazines (if you have them hanging around) and practicing identification is a bit of fun All the above terms were a foreign language to me a few months ago and I just learned 2 or 3 a day. Youtube (UK species) is also worth a look and any videos but by no means essential. I was happy scraping through (got 20 / 20 on the identification) Have fun - you with Peter P. ? feel free to PM me specific questions if you prefer Cheers AndyCM

Cushat
Is it possible to get the DSC Manual without actually signing up to the course?
sandersj89
Is it possible to get the DSC Manual without actually signing up to the course? Yes, the BDS sell it: http://www.bds.org.uk/product46.html But keep an eye out on ebay and other sites as second hand ones come up from time to time, just check the version is the current one though. Macnab
Thanks for all the replies chaps. Might come back and take up those offers. Have found most of what I seem to need on the BDS website but if anyone can point me towards an up to date deer quest cd that would be a big help. Thanks again. M PS not sure who is giving the course yet, except it's a BASC one.
