seb
Hi guys I need a little advice. Today I went to pickup our springer spaniel. She is 2 years old partly trained and has been living in kennels with about 13 other dogs. She seems really gentle and wont leave my side, she loves the kids and even ignores our chickens. She seems quite scared and has her tail between her legs and shakes quite a bit, all the new things must be a lot for her to take in I don't think she has been inside before. The problem is we tried to introduce her to our other dog in the garden and the springer snapped at her. Our other dog is a female pug about 2 years also. It is not the first time other dogs have snapped at the pug I guess they are a little wary of her and maybe don't know what she actually is to begin with but we want our two dogs to live together happily. The pug is mad and jumps about snorting and I guess the other dog might mistake this for growling. What can we do? I have heard about introducing them on neutral ground somewhere, we really want them to get on can anyone suggest anything? They have separate crates to sleep in, separate bowls etc. It doesn't help the springer is scared, she is happy and wagging her tail when retrieving. My wife loves her little pug and doesn't want her to get bitten. I have waited so long to get a springer spaniel, if we can get over this bit everything will be fine, help! lurcherboy
They will most likely sort out who is the leader over the next few weeks. BTW, it's harder to find a good dog than a wife LB

silver_pigeon
She sounds like she has not been socialised..I agree! Perhaps her kennel life has meant that she has only socialised "between bars"....neutral ground is really important, she knows that she is entering onto the Pug's territory and her fear may be causing her to react with agression! Crating them side by side but individually may help initially but don't let any wars develope over food and toys...try to keep them on a level par! Perhaps let he find her feet in her new environment before adding the"threat" of the pug...let her adjust and then meet the pug when she feels more settled...the tail between the legs is classic, she's frightened but her fight reaction is taking over! Best of luck and I really hope you can persevere with her..
seb
Thanks guys We took them to the field today and walked them together my wife had the pug and I had the springer and they didn't fight the springer was more interested in sniffing. Hopefully if we keep doing this they will get used to each other, I will definitely persevere she seems such a good gentle dog besides not liking the pug. In the kennels they were let out 4 times a day together for walks and there was another dog in her kennel with her. I think we will gradually move the crates nearer to each other. fallarben
dont want to say anything to upset anyone if prevease owner goes on here and reads something he does not like the gundog world is a small world so dont want to upset anyone plus can only give my apinion without seeing the dog sorry if i affended you. as for fearfull agression for those woundering what i ment by this this is normaly when a dog is frightened and may do lots of things as a result of this a dog can go as far as turn though this which is why if i go to look at a dog and its cowering in a corner il say thanks for ur time but no thanks not that the springer in question sounds this bad Edited October 23, 2008 by fallarben
seb
She is settling in really well now, tail wagging. The only thing I am watching is that the pug doesn't jump up her, if anything the pug hasn't socialised with many other dogs and doesn't understand a growl means stay away. She still hasn't eaten much but I think when she is hungry she will.
