coptleigh Posted November 7, 2008 Report Share Posted November 7, 2008 Had my 17 week pup out for a walk tonight, when I noticed someone in the distance pick up his dog as the came towards us, he was about 70yards away, I , as always, put my dog on his lead, as he came past me, he said" I'll have to carry him alll the way home or he will have your dog" at which I replied " I hope not, i continued walking and put about 40 yards between us, in the opposite direction, my dog still on his lead, to hear a shout , when I looked round his dog, some sort of bull terrier, was heading our way at a fair rate of knots, I did not have time to pick him up before it latched onto the rear end of my pup, I kicked , punched it to try and get it too leave, eventually the owner kicked it off, but not before it did some damage, he has puncture wounds to front and rear right legs, the vet said he should be OK, but is concerned about some cruciate ligament damage to his rear knee, they have kept him in overnight and he is on a drip, they need to settle him down before they can do anything to the wounds and investigate the knee!!!! I have reported it to the police as his dog also bit me in the incident, there must be something done about this dog and the owner, the only good thing was I was out with him, as I was at work last night, my wife walked him in the same place, dread to think what would be the result then!!!!!!!!! Why do people not control their dogs properly, it had no collar or lead on it and he obviously was aware that it was aggressive, My main worry, is he will now be fearful of other dogs, not what i want , if he is to be working with others, if I cannot get him re socialised, looks like he will be a house pet only. Just give him a bit of time to get over things and then ease him into it slowly. I really hope he's ok after all that, and I really would push to have that other dog sorted out. coptleigh Posted November 7, 2008 Author Report Share Posted November 7, 2008 Hi, Update on Bramble, they had to put him on a drip for the shock through the night, but he slept OK and "coloured" up well, phoned again at 9am, he is bit brighter this morning, and they will stitch him up etc later, got to phone after 2pm to see if he can come home. Waiting in for the police to come, really do hope something legally can be done about this, if not I'll be taking legal advice about a private prosecution, this dog is an obvious menace, and needs a lethal injection asap. She was walking past a house as a woman opened the door and her pitt bull cross ran out to attack the dog. She picked up her dog and the pitt bull jumped up and sunk it's teeth into her arm. She was taken away in an ambulance and the pitt bull was taken back into the house. Police attended, the owner was reported for failing to keep the dog under proper control and she pleaded guilty at court. She has been ordered by the court to keep the dog on a lead in a public place and to muzzle it. My mum got compensation through her solicitor for injury caused. I know it's not quite the same as your incident but I dont think you can expect any more than a court order to control the dog. They will probably say the dog did not attack you but you caused your own injury trying to pull the dogs apart. You may struggle to get any compo for that. Hope your dog is ok. coptleigh Posted November 7, 2008 Author Report Share Posted November 7, 2008 Hi Harry, The fact that I got bite is totally irrelevant,I'm not interested in claiming for anything for me, all I'm concerned about is that his dog is obviously vicious and he knew this, so should be under control at all times, leader, collar, MUZZLE, TEETH REMOVED, an ounce or two of lead shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Courts need to take a stronger line on these dogs, my pup this time, someone with a young child walking their Yorkshire terrier next, does not bear thinking about. My main worry is making sure my dog gets better and hope that he is not too traumatised, so whenever he sees another dog, he can handle it, looking into some sort of puppy socialising class in the local area, so he can regain his confidence with other dogs as soon as he is well enough to attend. One time a Weimaraner went for her and I just managed to pick her up, the reason and justification the lady gave me was. Ready for it!! He does not the long ears!! And another time I had to pull a staf for her as she was pined by her throat! The couple walked right in front of us and the lady said, my dog does not play well, before I could call Poppy he had her by the throat. the_commoner Posted November 7, 2008 Report Share Posted November 7, 2008 soz to hear about it, 36gm, SSG, high brass and got to be yellow should do the trick, if not the legal route is your best bet, i hope it gets sorted we have a guy in our village that has a bull x that has said to me when out with my cocker and my wife when she has walked the dog through the village that '' i better put him on the lead beacuse my dog would finish her in one bite if he wasn't'' at least he is being repsonsible by puting his dog on a lead etc i know, but i dont mind him saying to to me because god forbid if anything did ever happen his dog would get it first very very closely followed by him, but if ever anythig happened when my wife was on her own it would be horrific for her, or any of the youngish children that walk their dogs round the village after school these kind of things happen all too often you cannot blame the dog as such the owner obviously knew what it was likely to do but still allowed it off the lead, Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If they are inherently unstable and _likely_ to attack (given their breeding), then why do poepl have them as pets? I'm happy with a Springer because they are happy all the time and playful. Ted would not dream of attacking another dog, although he's getting far too friendly with the Chocolate Lab that lives down the road. Just out of interest, as a farmer has the right to shoot a dog if it is worrying his livestock, would the same go if it was after another dog or people? I realise Alan that it sounds like you werent walking on private land, but just wanted to know were you would stand in court on this matter? The two dogs that attacked Poppy, the owner's blamed us! One for Poppy having long ears and one for not stopping poppy going near their dog (even when they walked right in front of us) and she even told me to keep poppy under control! I had a bad time with a Doberman when I was younger and I am still not happy when I come across one when walking. But two months ago I cam across the biggest Doberman I have even see and to put it plainly I **** myself, what a lovely dog, it was so gently with poppy and like a big kid. To Proper dog owners who have, these breeds, it angers them that people see a problem with the breed and not the owners. I even see a cocker most mornings that I can’t walk near as it tries to bite poppy, and I know it’s not the breed! I am sure he will be better soon and this won’t affect him too much, spaniels are such happy dogs, once he meets some nice dog again, I am sure he will be fine!!! I hate it when people let an obviously aggressive dog run up to yours to "just say hello" it makes me really mad When I see another dog approaching like this I always put the lead on mine quick. One of my friends had a similar incident, his dog didn't get bitten luckily. He got her on the lead and this womans dog came running up to attack his dog. He told the woman if your dog attacks mine I am going to kick it to death. The woman was shocked but he explained his dog was on the lead under control and he was within his right as her dog was out of control and about to attack them both. Another time an old couple were walking down the road to us with a little dog on its lead, a vicious dog came up and started shaking it by the neck, there was nothing the old couple could do they had trouble just walking, my wife ran over to help as they were really upset about their dog all bleeding. The owner of the vicious dog was in a disability scooter and had some condition where she was unable to even put the lead on her dog and she knew the dog had done this before. I know some people would say nothing because she was disabled but my wife really put her in her place for owning the dog and not having it under control. Even in the road where I live there is a dog they just let out to roam the street and it has bitten 5 children we know about, our children play in the back garden away from it. My wife has the number for the dog warden by the phone for when we see it out. coptleigh Posted November 7, 2008 Author Report Share Posted November 7, 2008 Update on the pooch, just got off the phone from the vet, he has had his operation to stitch the wounds, some requiring internal stiches to help them heal, his knee looks like its just took a knock in the scuffle and the head vet reckons it will be OK, So he is sleeping off the anaesthetic and I have to pick him up in an hour or two, STILL waiting for the police to arrive to take a statement, I know they have to prioritise, but this is taking a bit too long, if I was reporting some racial harrasment, they be here pronto. Also booked some socialisation classes,to begin when he is back too normal, so help with his obvious fright now at anything with 4 legs, poor little mite, he's only a baby and to have to gothrough all this, he was comming on great guns aswell, would sit,stay, retrieve(in a fashion) still playing, he would even sit and recall to the whistle. lets hope he can regain his confidence and get back to what spaniels do best, Will stick a post on when he returns home and he has been made a big fuss of by me , the wife and the kids. Dad just grabbed it and threw it back at the owner telling him to put it under control. Our dog still scurries past the house that it used to live at!! It eventually got put down because it attacked other dogs in our village. The lad next door even got bitten when he tried to break up the same terrier and his dog. I find it hard to believe that people with aggressive dogs don't keep them under control. Course of antibiotics and pain relief, he is at this moment, being cuddled on the couch by my son, both wrapped in their favourite blanket, vet says he should make a good recovery, hope so. Total cost was £353 and pennies, they do not have a deal with my insurance to claim direct, so I had to pay and then claim it back, but for getting my dog back sorted, a very small price to pay. STILL waiting for the police to arrive, thought it might be better to go to the guys house, give him a swift wallop, and see how quick they come to see me then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the way, I think it was some sort of Bull Terrier cross, it was not a pure Staffy, but whatever it was, i agree, owners to blame more than the dogs.(Still don't like them though) Thanks to all for the kind words and support, let you know how he gets on, Bloody bad timing also, was suppose to be beating today and tomorrow at Lambton Park, my first time out. Imperfection Posted November 7, 2008 Report Share Posted November 7, 2008 The fact that I got bite is totally irrelevant, Its actually quite important.Because the dog has bitten you-this case has passed from being a civil matter to criminal so the Police are obliged to follow it up.Keep up the pressure and if they decide to drop the case-approach local rags cause they love stories like this and the Police hate bad publicity. Two years back,a particular nasty Akita mauled around a dozen dogs including my own and the Police wouldnt press charges as it never harmed a human. Cranfield Posted November 7, 2008 Report Share Posted November 7, 2008 Classes for young dogs are excellent socialising tools and quickly make young dogs confident around other dogs and can even help with aggressive tendencies.
