Supersonic
OK mods and guys & gals, I gave some sound professional advice to do with a commercial property deal today to a member who I've never clapped eyes on or spoken to before and was happy to do so, something that any surveying practice would charge a kidney for. I, like many others, belong to other forums albeit car marques, dogs etc, and one forum in particular (which admittedly is £45 a year to belong to) has a sticky with those who wish to participate in a 'shared trades' Q and A. Basically you share the common interest, come from all walks of life, and offer your advice in your profession for free (within reason of course!!). I'll happily sign up, and for the record I'm a general practice surveyor working in the commercial property sector specialising in telecomms/datacomms issues. amateur
Fine in theory for low value, low risk advice - but for most professions agreeing the scope and terms of reference of the job (within the context of your profession) is a major factor. Anybody fancy acting on some half-considered medical or dental advice on here? Edited January 21, 2009 by amateur
Mungler
General advice is something you give to mates anyway (and vice versa) over a chat at the burger van on Sunday mornings. Specifically though, insurance is a big factor for professional advice.
Baldrick
I agree with Mungler: PI insurance is the black cloud that hangs over any notion of giving such advice. Incidentally I'm a rural practice surveyor.
Cranfield
The theory behind this idea is very good and extremely generous. Unfortunately the reality of personal and professional liability means anything remotely "formal" is dead in the water. Leaving things in the informal/mates way they are at the moment is safest for everyone.

Wookie
Traztaz. Call in airstrikes? Do you do parties? My nephew would really like one of those.
Wookie
Oh yes, I'm a security release manager for a software company. If anyone wants advice on setting up process and/or policy behind the handling and fixing of software faults, let me know.

Klunk
SS, I think that's a splendid offer and you are definately to be commended for your public spirited attitude. There's a lot of value in altruism both for the recipient and giver, as well as the world in general. Bravo. BUT, unfortunately I think reality in the form of the liability issue has pretty well rained on the parade. ( I.T. )

What do you want to know? Do you want to know what i felt? The only thing i ever felt was a little recoil God bless the 5.56 FMJ
