Escort van cooling system

My 94 diesel escort van has no heating and I'm getting fed up with being freezing.

I changed the thermostat a few weeks ago, (it ran very cold) and for about 30 seconds heat came out of the blowers.

I've bled masses of air out of the valve on the top radiator hose, and again, the heating works for a short while, but then goes back to bloody cold ???

There seems to be an air lock in there somewhere, but I can't flipping get it out.

I look ridiculous driving round to Heathrow at 5 in the morning with a bloody great fur hat on, puffa jacket, scarf and gloves, (plus a blanket over my knees :D ).

Any ideas chaps?

P.

If you have to add water to bleed air out, after it has already been bleed and ran fine, then it is using water, your vans engine only holds 8.6 lts of coolant, you can not keep adding 1/2 a ltr to bleed air out with out it going somewhere, the smallest of leaks will leak air in too, air which will trap at the highest point, the heater

Cheers Paul, I think I may have misled you/put the wrong thing in. I haven't added any water at all to the system, (apart from a bit after fitting the thermostat).

My brother, (an ex mechanic), thought it might have been the expansion bottle lid. However, when I released it just now, it hissed, showing a build up of pressure - apparently about 12psi.

I'm intrigued by Codlings post, as Bruv reckons it should be built up to pressure, then have the air released from the valve. He even suggested jacking it right up so that's the highest point and then trying.

I attempted such a thing on a really steep slope nearby and for about 30 secs got some heat - rapidly replaced by chilliness

It's getting to the point where I'm going to take it into Fords and get them to do it, (following an estimate for the job :thanks: ).

Pedro.

With engine ticking over, Remove ONE heater pipe end (highest if poss, ) Run hosepipe into rubber hose nice and gentle, When water runs through full system and out of heater stub with NO bubbles, Carefully and quickly replace hose. Make sure engine is warm enough to open thermostat whille you do this, It has got a thermoastat in i presume?:good:
