holly
going to be fitting my gun cabinet this week , i have also bought a steel key cabinet (yale) with combination lock built in , would it be ok to bolt this to the side of the gun cabinet or does it need to be well away from the cabinet i am just in the process of applying for sgc so it will be getting inspected by the firearms officer :o
radio1ham
i wouldnt keep my keys near them cabinet i always take my keys with me no matter what as if you leave keys near cabinet and you happen to have a break in (hopefully this will never happen ) and they see a box for holding keys they will work on that to get them so in my opinion not a good idea best be safe than sorry
sbald
I have the same set up but my key safe is in a seperate cupboard well away from the gun safe and out of sight, unless you knew it was there you wouldnt find it. This was passed by my FEO.
Imperfection
My cabinet keys are always on me as thats the most securest place and spare set is hidden in house.I wouldnt personally have a key safe because a potential thief would rightly asume the gun cabinet keys are inside it.In my opinion-the guns security would rely on a small safe with combination lock. Sbald's idea of hiding it is by far the best option if you go this route. Edited February 8, 2009 by Imperfection

kak-in-my-eyes
I always keep safe keys on me. On the understanding that if someone can gain access to the guns. ie open the safe with a key you could be held some part responsable. May be wrong? Have'nt told anyone where spare key is

Guest
My keys are well hidden in my house. I would never carry safe keys with me in case they get lost. I considered thinking that it would be a good idea to carry them on me, but in retrospective, whenever those keys go outside my house there is a security risk. :-s
steve_b_wales
I bolted my safes onto the top of my cabinets. They are also bolted onto the wall. No problems from the FEO. Mainly used for storing ammunition, but also keys as well. These are actually safes that I bought from Argos (I think) and have digital locks (key back up) Edited February 8, 2009 by steve_b_wales

ozzy518
I have my gun safe in one room and is well hidden and a combination safe in another which i keep my section 1 ammo in. Again it is well hidden. My thoughts were that seeing as i have got a safe i may as well keep the keys in it.
reedbradshaw
Theres no requirement for an extra safe for an SGC. Just keep the keys well hidden and spend the money saved on carts I get impression everybody thinks that the FAO is there to test you and will only grant a SGC or a FAC if you pass. I too thought this until he actually came round for the visit. He said from the off that it is my right to have a SGC and hes only here to make sure i am of sound mind and that the guns would be secure enough. Big_Sam
Had the FEO round last week to check the cabinet mountings (moved house), and I wasn't in so they asked my mum to open the cabinet so they could check the serial numbers..... which of course was not possible as I'm the only person who knows where the keys are kept. Apparently they assumed (wrongly) that my parents (who are not SGC holders) would have access to a SECURED cabinet No one knows where my keys are kept.... :yp: .....and I just hope I can remember where I put them.....
