Hammergun
Does anyone have any experience of using pigeon calls. If so, I'd like to hear from you! How and when do you use them?
Cranfield
Can you buy pigeon calls ? I have never heard of them (that don,t mean much ).
NGhost
I have been told that you cant call pigeon. (why do they make all that noise then?) Nigel
neil
I have seen them for sale but dont know of anyone who owns one
Hammergun
I have since found out that they are only for use when roost shooting.
Cranfield
I have only heard pigeons calling, when they are at rest in the trees. I haven,t noticed that their calling attracts other pigeons. So even if you could makea noise like a pigeon, what good would it do you ? It sounds like something that catches the shooter ,rather than the pigeon.
Craigie
It sounds like something that catches the shooter ,rather than the pigeon. No pun intended though Cranfield LOL
Hammergun
I think that it is to locate a roost rather than to attract them.
Hubertus
Hello from Germany, they work quite well. You use them in spring when the pigeons [i don't know the english word: before they make eggs]. The male pigeon is then calling and comes to the call because he thinks that it is another male pigeon. You don't have big bags with that hunting but it is a really good sport! Sorry for my bad english. Waidmannsheil! Hubertus
highdowns hunter
A friend of mine has an electronic bird call which has quite a few voices on it It is quite loud and I suppose you could use it on a calm spring or summers evening but if its windy it would be a waste of time He bought this one in Cyprus
Hubertus
you can imitate the pigeon call with your hands or buy one. Its like a flute. the price is in germany round about 7 pound. Waidmannsheil! Hubertus
Guest flightline
Hubertus-I think we might call the pigeons in the "before they make eggs " stage: pairing up or searching for a mate     So I guess the theory (and practice) is that the male pigeon is attracted to the (artificial) call of another male pigeon in order to drive him off? Deako
H, it can best be described as '********'.....
Hammergun
Hubertus - it's really "courting". By the time they get to Deako's stage I don't expect they'd be doing much calling.
ernyha
:*) Hubertus if you are getting confused by these crude persons use of the English language, what they are trying to say is that the male bird is trying to get his leg over. 8-) p.s. I told you that you needed a sense of humour to join this forum.
Deako
Ernyha, I have to say you are wrong.....I have observed hundreds of pigeons trying to get 'their leg over'.......and they always fall off the branch!
Tony
Maybe this could explain the mystery of the dead pigeons previously thought to have died of acorn poisoning. They obviously fell from the tree and broke their necks after attempted leg over! I too have seen pigeon calls advertised but do not know of anyone using one.
