Gazman
I've been trying to quit for two months now. Got it down from 20 a day to 10. But my weakness is that first ciggie in the morning with a coffee. I reckon if I can get that beaten I should be able to give up outright. I don't enjoy smoking anymore except that first one in the morning.
ShaggyRS6
yeah, the first one is a killer. I lay in bed last night thinking about how I was not gonna me able to have it in the morning. that's a bad thing
MM
other things to worry about. if you have a lot on your mind, stopping smoking is not going to happen.

Chard
I think you'll have a job quitting unless you just stop. Cutting down isn't a fat lot of good I'm afraid. (And I know all about addiction, I smoked for 35 years and quit about 4 years ago. Didn't use patches or any of that old cobblers, you just have to stop). First 3 days are the worst, get through that and you've cracked it. No half measures I'm afraid, nobody said it's easy. I must say though, you really need to want to stop. If you just think you probably ought to, it probably won't happen. Good luck with it chap Oh and if it starts looking like you have cracked it, watch what you eat. I put 3 stone on and feel worse than I ever did
Cranfield
Stopping cold turkey is the best way, forget patches or cutting down, you are just fooling yourself. If you really want to stop, you can.

Axe
There is always going to be somethig going on in your life that can be used as an excuse not to stop. Don't try because deep down it nigggles your conscience somehow, stop because you simply don't want to smoke anymore. You don't need to beleive or be force fed reasons, if you don't want to smoke anymore, you won't. I read Alan Carr's book and whilst some would say it doesn't perform miracles, it certainly conditioned my mind enough to understand the process and was the catalyst for me not to smoke. taggy
go for it pal. no half measures! i gave up after smoking for 10 years. not that long i know, but the problems are the same. that first one is the one to watch. change your routine slightly, have a book where you sit in the morning, change chairs. silly things like that`ll help
Mrs Sweepy
Think how nice it will be when you meet someone nice and your breath dont smell like a ashtray. That was one of my biggest turn offs. Though i did marry Sweepy whos like the little chimney. Love must be blind. xxxxSuzy P,S Sweepy your breath did not smell. Just to put the record straight. Sundowner
I have been dreading to read this thread !!! But, let me first of all make it clear that: Giving up smoking is soooo easy, I do it every morning! but seriously now, I wish you all would have put down your ages! I have this fear, which needs to come out into the open. All my mates over the years, had to, were told by their GP's, wanted to give up smoking and DID! My fear is that exactly the same is going to happen to me as happened to them. THEY KICKED TH EBUCKET WITHIN A YEAR! I spoke to my doctor about it, to the nurse who does the "give up" thing and they all tell me the same thing, even though it obviously better in the long run, in the short term I will get just about evey little niggling cold, flue, inflammation etc etc, whatever comes along. Plus the Biggy I mentioned above! I am 55 now, and I have smoked since I was 9 or ten! Is my fear irrational? Are there any medical ppl here who can tell me something different? I know there aren't any guarantees , but hey, it sure would help me kick the habbit !! Many thanks in advance for any reassurance

realtreedave
i gave up 4 years ago, after smoking 20-30 a day for 20 years.in the end i just hated every fag i smoked,i used patches, they do help,i also redirect the money i save back into my shooting[10 to 20 weeks is a decent rifle,1 day is100 rounds 22lr or a box of shotgun shells].its not easy you just have to convince yourself that there are better things in life.good luck mate

I fact I never get colds now I just eat.....and eat......and eat I'm 54 and gave up when I was 50. Probably started when I was about 13ish. A good trick is to wait till you get a cold, one of those snotbusting little ******** that make you feel rough, and then just stop. You won't really want a fag as badly as normal because you feel like a dead dog. If you can string it out for a couple of days, you're over the worst and no looking back Far easier than dieting. I can't seem to lose this weight, but I was surprised how easy quitting the fags was once I'd survived the first few days
Dave-G
I'll second that. I smoked for most of my adult life, started properly with duty free blue liners as a junior stoker aged 16 in the Navy. We all know how invincible we felt in our younger years - and wouldn't take a telling about how bad some of what we did was for us and we'll pay for it in later life. It's true - believe me it is very true. I haven't looked in your profile shaggy so I don't know how old you are but there will come a time when you start coughing up all sorts of disgusting gunge that can be avoided if only you will listen to your elders. I managed to crack it about 5 years ago now, did it by accident though at first. I had the worst flu/broncitis/pneumonia or whatever of my life, was in bed for five days and too sick to even think about a fag. Day six I felt well enough to smoke and lit one up, took a drag, coughed and thought what the ellam I doin? I've gone five days without reaching for one,. That was my last. I told that so you dont think I think it's easy. You can do it mate. I look back on it and think how pathetic it was to light up when going to use the phone. light up when going for a dump. light up when starting up the car, when having a tea or pint - the list is endless - and sad. Get through the first day and you have cracked it. If you smoke when socialising then don't socialise - dump your friends and go shooting for a week.
