Gun Snobs

I have read on many occasions how last weekend someone non specific went to a non specific part of the country where are non specific group of people (who were specifically dressed in tweeds) and who were driving non specific (but specifically expensive) 4x4's and who then:

1. frowned at or belittled the use of a [insert choice of [a] pump action semi auto [c] hammer gun [d] Baikal / cheap shotty]

2. refused to [insert choice of [a] pick up their empty cartridges stop speaking loudly]

It's all ******. I have never seen anyone be rude to anyone at a clay ground about anything let alone whether their gun was expensive or nice enough.

However, on a final word I would like to clarify that I do consider that Lanber shotguns are for gypsies and people who smell of wee.

 My neighbour has a Lanber, thats priceless (edited before ferretter08 comments, i'm not talking about his gun being priceless)

But would you say that about a Lanber whose beauty had rendered me not to use it?

Furthermore :hmm: on the subject of ******. It's amazing how many bolsheviks have one of these tales to tell about thrashing a clay shooter. Same old, same old - clay shooter (with a skeet vest) with expensive shotgun, bolshevik with a Lanber. Guess what - Lanber man outshoots the club champ (with a skeet vest) every time. Funny that

I believe this (allegedly) to be the product of an over-vivid imagination. I suspect it's what Comrade Lanber would like to happen, but I suspect it's usually entirely fictional.

Now I do admit that Magman beat me on one occasion, by a couple of lucky clays, but then I'm not club champ (though I do wear a skeet vest), and I don't have a very expensive shotgun.

I also admit that I enjoy having the odd round with the Mossberg, but I don't pretend that I beat everybody and I've never had anybody be rude to me (probably because I'm armed) :good:

I've come up with an almost foolproof way to keep both the snobs and the inverted snobs either happy or angry.

Given the money I'd buy a very expensive gun (Sorry Chard but not a Krieghoff cos I think they look bloody awful) and then, and here's the clever bit, I'd neglect it! Never clean it, not worry too much about a dint in the woodwork, let the chokes rust in etc etc.

The snobs would be both glad I'd got a decent gun but furious that it looked like **** and the inverted snobs would be furious to see a well made gun but pleased that it looked like tat.

Everybody happy!!!

I agree in part, in that I don't like to see snobbery and people being put down because they haven't got a posh gun (or house or car)

However  the other thing I can't stand is b******t cloth cap inverted snobbery. It's just as bad. If a bloke has worked hard, made a few bob and wants to buy himself a 9000 Krieghoff then get over it. I like to own nice things, problem is I can't afford to these days. If I had a lot of cash, I would buy a Krieghoff. If I had a bit more cash than I do, I'd buy a DT10. I know it doesn't make me shoot any better, but I like nice things. I'm not a snob and I wouldn't ridicule somebody else, because they shoot with a Baikal, but if they ridicule me because I shot with a Krieghoff, they'd learn some new language :good: .

Green-eyed envy and jealousy is just as bad as pomp and swank.

Just because a bloke has an expensive gun and a big house, doesn't automatically mean he's a ********. It certainly doesn't mean he can't shoot, I'm not quite sure where that assumption comes from.

Nicely said. :hmm:

I shoot with people that have guns that range between K80s and things I wouldn't use as fence posts, but we are all happy shooting buddies.

well said Chard...

At the end of the day, if you are an ********... you're an ********.... money or not!!! I've meant skint *********, & monied *********. I've met ********* with expensive guns & ********* with cheap guns.....

In a short period of time I have accumulated a lot of shooting gear (multiple skeet vests, etc.... etc) & have spent a lot of money on my new hobby - including on a few guns. I would neither look down on someone with an inferior gun or look up to someone with a better gun. I would hope that no-one would be looking at my accumulated gear & thinking "what an ********"..... If you think I'm an ******** because of my personality, then that's up to you.... but not down to guns & gear!

I DO, however, look up to someone who has a high skill level in shooting & admire how they do it. If I practice enough, hopefully one day I will get quite decent at this sport, as I love it.

I think there are too many people, both looking down at people with "inferior" guns..... & wanting to get one over on people who have a decent gun. Why bother? Just get on with your life....... it's too short as it is.....

just my opinion...... (written by an ********)

Yes, that's about how I see it...

My other gripe, which is sort of connected to this, is elitism. Whilst, like you, I can admire the skills of top shooters, there are many of them whose attitude leaves a lot to be desired, and this certainly isn't a class thing. It's elitism and some of the worst offenders are "working class heroes" who have made it to the top of their sport. They talk to everybody outside of their clique as if they're conversing with a piece of dog****. Unfortunately, ordinary blokes make it worse by massaging their egos and grovelling to them (I don't, but I find it causes no end of unpleasantness  )

Of course there are plenty of exceptions, but I just don't understand why they have to be like this.

Must admit that i've never encountered any snobbery at my local clay ground when i've taken either the Escort or Lanber and when out in the fields-woodies arent judgemental anyway. However it might be due to me stinking of pee and being a pykie which scares them into staying quiet...

I couldnt give a toss what people might think anyway.I dont earn spectacular amounts of money and even less now they've cut my hours so i just cannot afford expensive guns and thats the truth. My first priority will always be paying the mortgage.

Indeed I am afraid we have all heard variations of the old BS story, that goes something like:

"my mate drinks with a bloke a bloke who's sister's boyfriend use to know a bloke who has a shotgun made out 2 bit's of pallet wood and 2 scaffold pipes all held together with bailer twine and he turned up at a posh shoot where evryone had brand new ranges rovers and £100,000 Purdey's and he beat them all and you should have seen the look on their posh faces when he collected all the prize money it was priceless..."

Yer riiiiight

Agree totally Stuart.

I would however add that Lanber owners are still wee smelling gypsies :good:

I think some of the alleged snobbery is caused by an over-sensitive reaction to comments from fellow shooters.

When I say that nobody has ever been rude to me when I shoot clays with the Mossberg, that doesn't mean I've not had comments or looks ;) . However, because I'm confident (arrogant) and not on the defensive, I am able to counter these light-hearted jests with something suitably withering and it all goes off OK. I think some people must feel self conscious about their gun/car/house/**** and are therefore likely to kick off and get all offended if anybody looks in their general direction :good:

I find that the Mossie a good conversation starter and I've made some very nice acquaintencies at Worsley, both among the ***** wee-smellers and the well-heeled. It just depends whether you can carry it off or not, without getting all anal about it.

Maybe my reaction was impulsive but I wouldn't say "over-sensitive" as I wasn't being defensive I was being protective. Slight difference; I can pretty much take anything on the chin when it comes to my self because like you I'm confident/arogant enough. But I do react when I see someone getting picked on or be-littled. As you have said I more than likely over reacted to the comment, but hey ho that's me.

Maybe I should join the Guardian Angels ;)

When I first started shooting I bought myself a Baikal fixed choke non eject over/under 12 bore,

I then came into some money, and hayho thought I'd get a better gun. So I went out and bought a browning admitedly a medalsit

but anyhow, great gun still working 15 years later, but boy do I miss the old Baikal, & I seem to miss the clays and pigeons.

never missed with the Baikal??

There might be a medalist up for sale soon?:good:??

To be absolutely honest, I'd quite like to get a Baikal

There's a cracker in the for sale section at the moment but in Hampshire and the chap wants a local sale.

They're clearly built to last and I wouldn't mind one as a knockabout/spare/windup tool :good:
