As far as I can tell they were walking n he tripped in a rabbit hole n shot her in the leg. Sounds like a shotgun as it says "the gun closed up"

I don't like how the media has thrown in a picture of a handgun though as theres no mention of a handgun being used at all, the gun is "legally held" so doubt its a handgun

Bloody press, no wonder pistols are banned  Hope the woman is ok, sounds like a silly mistake

So if you are walking about with your gun broken do you also have it loaded? I guess it would be quicker to then close the gun and get a shot off when necessary but it would be safer not to have it loaded surely?

its quicker to get a shot off and in theory safer to have a broken gun if you're walking up game or vermin, but in this case sounds like the safety was off its bad luck and a tragic accident and fortunately thats how the police are treating it. I usually have it broken but loaded but safety on as well plus usually keep my thumb on the cartridges so that would stop the gun closing, means it would hurt if the barrels tried to shut but they wouldn't manage it
