busbiter Posted September 11, 2009 Report Share Posted September 11, 2009 Just a qucik one, has anyone on here purchased/bid for items on any of their sealed bid auctions? There is a few lots that I have been tracking on their next sale on 25th September that I am very interested in. Just wondering if anyone can give any further details, how long you get to pay/collect any lots purchased, can items be delivered via courier etc. Also as regards with estimates, the lots i am watching, estimate is £30-£40 on both, personally i think this sounds cheap for what the lots are 250 (probably 20-40 year old) cartridges! Vince Green Posted September 12, 2009 Report Share Posted September 12, 2009 (edited) Holts Auctions can be an absolutely marvellous source of cheap guns often at a fraction of what you could expect to pay from a dealer. Only trouble is unless you are prepared to take a chance there could be a problem that wasn't declared but its still worth a punt. Pick up a nice little .410 for £10. Have a look at their website and view the online catalogue fore the 25th. I guarantee your tongue will be hanging out. andythechicken Posted September 14, 2009 Report Share Posted September 14, 2009 I have bid several times and I have found that their sale prices can be high, plus you had to add on the buyers percentage. Bonhams auction is definetly better value. However, it look like they have some very good value SxS in the sealed bids. I will be going to the viewing tomorrow evening at 6pm. It is very important that you view as they have a lot of trash. If it's for a shotgun you also need to have a look at the bore thickness charts they have as a lot of the guns are well worn and close to the legal limit. busbiter Posted September 15, 2009 Author Report Share Posted September 15, 2009 Andy/Vince, Looking at the terms and conditions on holts website, the way that I understand it is that the lots are stored at the norfolk address up until the week prior to the auction and then are transferred to london for the sale. Collecting cartridges from hammersmith would be a bit of a mission it has to be said which is a shame. Does anyone know how suitable the parking is around that way and also if any purchased lots could be collected over a weekend? "Lots can be paid for and collected on the day of the auction, or by pre-arrangement, can be collected the following morning from Princess Louise House. Remaining Lots will be taken to the gunroom in Norfolk. They can be collected from there or alternative arrangements can be made by liaising with the main office. Please note that sealed bid lots 6000 to the end of the sealed bid sale will not be available for viewing at Princess Louise House during sale week. They will be available to view by appointment only in the weeks preceding the sale at Church Farm Barns, Wolferton, Norfolk. There will be no condition reports or additional photography available for these items." The rest of the lot's for the 25th from 6000 upwards do not need to be taken to London as it is a sealed bid auction where no-one is present to bid on items but the stuff for the sale on the 17th is a normal bidding auction where items are shown as you bid on them and can be collected after the sale or the next morning after then they are taken from Hammersmith to Norfolk . I have e-mailed holts this morning to get a clearer picture and as you say andy, from lot 6000 onwards, they are stored in norfolk and do not go to london at all. Makes it a bit easier to collect but unfortunately they are not open over the weekend for collections or payments. Still couldn't help myself and have bid anyway so looks like I will be taking a day off of work and having a trip to norfolk with the missus if I do end up buying them! It is Located on the Hammersmith Road on the north side right up by the Hammersmith one way system. There's not a lot of parking round there but there may be an underground car park under the middle of the one way system. Otherwise you may be able to park in Brook Green but its doubtful. I am just posting this so that others might find it useful if they decide to bid in the future, Even at the prices they went for both rifles were bargains, one was only £7 over my bid. Had them check the bore thickness at the time of viewing and they were fine. Bid £339, am a happy bunny. Even with the buyers premium and delivery charges this is a bargain. busbiter Posted September 28, 2009 Author Report Share Posted September 28, 2009 Well unfortunately I didnt win the cartridges that I bid on, to be fair though I was being a bit optimistic with my bids and took a bit of a flyer on them. Bid on 250 alphamax 16 guage 7's and they made £65 and also 250 eley hymax 16 guage 4's and they made £63, estimates were £30-£40 on both lots (my bids were well over top estimate but not high enough!!!). Taking into account the 20% buyers premium + £20 in diesel to collect I am happy enough that they made all the money and have now convinced myself that I would not have paid that amount for them. Incidentally, anyone care to have a crack at ageing these lots? I have an old eley catalogue from 1967 at home and they made alphamax, hymax, maximum and grand prix in 16 guage back then. I am sure eley have only made grand prix, VIP and alphamax in 16's in the last 20 years or so so would think these may have been from the seventies if not older. Would absolutely love to get hold of a few boxes of any these old cartridges, in my eyes eley dont make them like they used too! I shot duck a few seasons back on an organised flight and was offered some old eley hymax 16 guage but unfortunately lost the guys number, his name was jack and he was from mersea island near colchester, ring any bells with anyone??? Andy, sounds like you had a result with your rifle that you bought and vince, point taken on the bids/estimates, definately worth taking into account for any future bids. As an auctioneer myself (vehicles) i always go on the safer side when valuing vehicles so sure holts are very much the same, gets a bit of interest if the estimates are low. I had an Eley catalogue for 1957 and I am sure they were around then. I gave the catalogue to a friend who collects cartridges but I will get him to check. I've sent him an e-mail. As soon as I hear back from him I will post it. If the cartridges were that old they would probably have gone off, the primers start to degrade and you get hang fires. I was given a few old eley grand prix 16's a few years back that probably would have dated back to the early 80's if not 70's and did have one or two hang fires on the few that I have shot. I still have a few at home so will try and post a pic and see if anyone can put an age on them, some have kynoch stamed heads and some are just stamped eley 16 eley 16, all with a silver heads rather than brass heads.
