Redditch Posted June 30, 2015 Report Share Posted June 30, 2015 well, after weeks of rain, we finally got a forecast of good weather Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Monday I had dentist and vets with the one dog, for its 2nd booster (had 1st booster a month back, but this is a new type annual booster done in two stages apparently) She had no problems with the first booster, and I expected none with the second. Got up at 03:00 and was set up on the field by 04:00 Dropped the first corvid at 05:00 and then generally 1-2 every 30-40 minutes. BUT, the dog was extremely lethargic, and she couldn't find anything. Even those I found for her, she sniffed them, but didn't seem to recognise them and left them alone :( Result was, that with most I shot ending up in the field behind the hedge (behind me), which is silage 3-4 foot high grass, I was hardly finding any, and so packed up at 09:30 with 14 down and only 8 recovered :( So I thought, ahhhh, tomorrow she might have recovered, only to have my cat come in tonight with a massively swollen front leg, so have to go to the vets in the morning with her. Thursday is thunder and lightning and heavy rain, so booked for the doctors then. But .... I wouldnt use your dog for retreaving crows and rooks . You might just find one day your dog finds a pricked carion Hen bird . And your dog will more than likly come off worse . Then you will have one pised off dog and a massive vets bill .I don't usually use the dog on corvids for that very reason, but the field I was shooting backs onto a silage field, and can't really have dead birds ending up in the silage, that would poison cattle, and hence had no option but to use her. Also the reason I use 36 gr of no4 shot instead of 32 gr of no6 shot. The birds here are very hardy, and using no4 instead of no6 tends to ensure less pricked birds an more dead birds. 36gr of no4 has the same amount of shot as 32 gr of no6, but hits harder Costs me £10.00 a slab more, but worth it for the peace of mind Edited July 1, 2015 by Redditch Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
