  1. aye, well other then rat anything i plan on shooting will be eaten. rats just get to go to the next life for free :) the blighters.

i'll prolly leave it for now. i'm not confident enough just yet to bag pheasant with a rifle. with my hands would be easier where i airsoft in fact lol. i just need to lie in wait till they walk past and grab one

  2. I'm pretty sure this post is a wind up, this guy ought to be hung up by his sensitive bits and flogged with his Diana .177 for even contemplating such an idea.

That's what the adjacent Keeper would be inclined to do if ever he heard about it, quite right too.

Whatever next, Muntjac hunting with catapults..??

    Cat

actually no it isn't a wind up, i wanted to know what the stance on it was. now i know, ask not and you shall walk in ignorance and all that?

as for Muntjac, i think a trebuchet might be a little bit overkill and somewhat innacurate.... :good:

  3. to my knowledge he does indeed shoot pheasants in season. although i can't say if its with an airgun. mostly likely not tbh but no worries i think i'll leave em be unless i'm packing the proper kit. i'll leave the airgun to tree rats, rabbits, pigeons and other vermin.

    cheers chaps

  4. right. i understand that it is not pheasant season and that it runs from aug til feb. however i want to know the viability of hunting pheasant with an airgun and a springer at that.

the local site i visit for airsoft is PACKED with the blighters and i'm luckily getting the opportunity to go out with the current permission holder on that land (and a few more opportunities too coming up)

for instance, yesterday i was lay up in ambush under a bush waiting for the apposing team to walk by my position... just as the third man walks past my point i'm ready to open up on them (classic ambush) and a whole herd (is it herd?) suddenly runs through my position flapping and squawking! needless to say as soon as they flapped off i got lit up like a christmas tree.... (ow)

i'm asking because when the time comes i'll probebly have an opportunity to go for em BUT i want to know if i can do so with a 12ft-lb air rifle or would i just be maiming an animal i should be shooting with something bigger? (headshots of course)

    thanks

  5. okay not sure if your highlighting that for emphasis or because you think i made a mistake.

i'm talking yards here 35 feet is 11.5 yards. can you confirm that this is the ideal killing range on a spring based .22

or is it about 30 yards which is 90 feet?

    pete

  6. Hello again mate

70ft is too far away for your average airgun, especially Co2. The pellet just wont have enough penetration left at that range. I would recommend a maximum range of 35ft for a .22, unless it is FAC rated and you can consistently put 9 out of 10 shots into a 1" target at that range.

I suggest before you go into the field you have a good read up on hunting, especially respect for your quarry. I am not trying to be rude mate, but you don't sound like you are ready for live quarry.

If you do want to get straight out then I can recommend a book by John Darling called "the Hunters Secrets", it taught me a lot when I started hunting.

    Cheers

    Dan

i thought it was about 30-35 yards airguns were decent to? spring included?

  7. you could "shim" your scope rings or mounts? toothpaste tubes and even coke cans make excellent shims just cut out a small piece and your sorted.

be careful they can be sharp though. once mounted it should give you all the grip you need.

its quick and dirty but does work

    pete

edit. sorry mis read your post. shimming probebly won't help aye. new rings needed methinks.

  8. I have a as New HW 95K fitted with a Simmonds 3X9X40 scope .177 callibre, I want £200.00 plus postage. The only problem with the HW 80 and the underlever models are the weight as found them heavy to carry for any real distance.you dont say what part of britain you live in.

aha, well spotted that man. i've now changed my profile settings. i'm up in cheshire. "pancake country" cause we're flat as a calm sea

as for underleaver i'm not all that fussed on weight. every other weekend i run around in full combat kit and a steel/wood AKM (Airsoft) so i'm used to it

    also you have pm.

  9. guys, what can i say? excellent thanks!

i'm currently looking into some now and these are some great suggestions. i did pop by a shop on my way home from work today and they had alot of SMK models, i take it these are bad then? they were in fact the cheapest in the shop.

i did spot the lightning and the lightning XL from BSA and they caught my eye. i do have a fondess for all things BSA (and Triumph) related anyways

i'll let you know how i get on with rifles but more suggestions are very appreciated chaps. i've learned alot in the last 48 hours and i've even had an offer of a shoot with a chap who manages the area we airsoft in (and his bud) so i'm hoping to pick up a few things :hmm:

  10. we use PMR's for airsoft alot and believe me we've tried and tested ALOT of headsets and units. by far the best all rounder on the market is the motorola XTN 446 its an amazing radio. it also clocks in at £150! however it is the best. the second option (the one i have) is the Alan 456r which is small, powerfull and usefully takes AA bats (3 of) you can get headets, earpieces, handsets and whatnot from maplins to go with it. the alan clocks in at £50 new.

we use this over sites of about 200 acres or so, urban, woodland whatever they're pretty good!

also both of these radio's have a "vox" option which means you won't have to press any buttons to talk to your m8 you simply talk and it picks it up.

all from maplins to boot :good:

  11. i was doing a website many moons ago and i had a page of random pics and whatnot. a friend made a picture. it was a tin of fish and he replaced the body of the fish with a melon slice.

then put the label as being genetically modified fsh (fish with no eyes) and the fish had a caption saying "bloody scientists"

and so it stuck i've used melonfish since.

  12. Chaps,

I'm currently looking into bagging myself some rabbits and pigeons. however, i don't want to be bothered with an FAC or complicated CO2 refills or expensive cartridges etc so i'm mainly looking at springers.

now i know very little about the current market having had all my air rifle experience when i was about 11 ish with my uncle. mostly using a BSA meteor to shoot at targets and pidgeons in the woods up by his. (i'm now 28)

now am i correct in saying i can get a spring rifle that'll kill a rabbit at about 30-35yrds? (i'll most likely be shooting under 30) and is lever better then break barrel. i would assume so because hte barrel has less movement hence less chance of inaccuarcy with the scope.

any advice at this stage on rifle types, powers. prices and places to shop for em would be excellent!

sorry for all the silly questions chaps, i've had a bit of a read through and i'm just trying to fill the gaps in my knowledge :drinks: all in all though the site so far has been a goldmine of info :good:

    thanks!

    pete

  13. i'll give you one bit of advice if your making a ghillie from a mesh base. once you've added your hessian outer etc.

    get it fireproofed!

in dry conditions it only takes one fag end to make you into the wicker man!

if you've got the money however try taking a look at russian surplus stuff, the sniper suits are particularly good especially the "leshy" suit. waterproof and perfect for laying up in the leafyness :hmm:

i know i'm a noob but i play alot of airsoft and not being seen is something me and the guys go in for, i've also seen someone set fire to their ghillie and i wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

    pete

  14. hello,

noob here. just looking at gutting and skinning some rabbits and i've got to say this thread is fantastic! extremely helpful chaps.

i wanted to ask though about the liver spots and other signs i should be looking for that the rabbit isn't edible?

doesn't the liver spots show mixi?

    thanks

    pete

  15. My names Pete and i'm from NE warrington, how do?!

been looking into wabbit hunting recently and i'm about to get kitted out. thought it'd be a smart bet to get on a forum with lots of experienced chappies and figure it all out :welcomeani:

possibly looking at other types of vermin bagging too, lots of farmers in the area and plenty of vermin. i'm an avid airsofter so i'm used to crawling through the mud and i'm up on my airgun/RIF/IF laws to boot.

    Pete
