Ive got a couple of old side by sides with fixed chokes. Am i right in thinking that the right hand barrel is the more open of the two and the left the tighter barrel. I wonder if they are the same as when i clean barrels with the phosphor bronze they 'feel' exactly the same diameter.
Next time you buy cartridges take the gun to the shop with you and ask them to put the gauge in the barrels to determine the choke of the barrels. Also, if there is a difference in choke you should see it by looking down the barrels into a ceiling light.
Obviously best way is to get the guage in it.
Hope that helps

Completely agree with highseas. Be respectful, patient and enjoy the day. Besides, your not there to impress folk with your newly acquired tweed outfit. And if there are any really rich folk there, you can spot them a mile off as they will more than likely be the one wearing a pair of lightweight trousers and a wooly jumper.... Like I said, concentrate on how you carry yourself.
Don't shoot at unsporting birds and above all, enjoy the day

On a budget get a pair of corduroy trousers, commando wooly jumper, and wear a shirt and tie. With your le chameau wellies and smart green jacket you will be fine. Don't get to hung up about what your wearing as you will see a mix of folk. Some wearing full tweed attire, some wearing a wax jacket. You will get more respect by the way you carry yourself on the day rather than what you wear.
So spend more time thinking about being more of a sport than dressing like a mansion owner, you will be fine. Its all about etiquette.
Hope that settles your mind.

Its not a matter of what I'm willing to go down too fella as I'm not selling because I'm desperate for cash. I'm selling because its just sitting in the cabinet and I'm too be busy pursuing my kayak fishing to warrant keeping it. Once the gun sells I am going to be selling my hunting gear. My gundog excluded of course! She will be living out the rest of her days with me.
A have put it up for a very reasonable price, but obviously I am willing to negotiate a little just due to the fact I'm not using it.

GUN SOLD!
GUN SOLD!
MORE PICS AT BOTTOM OF THIS THREAD.
Webley + Scott 812 semi auto for sale in mint condition. 3 inch magnum chamber, 28inch barrels, black synthetic in excellent condition, has seen very little use. I will also leave the stock cartridge holder on the gun. Handy piece of kit!
As you can see from the pics, it has been well taken care of, it's approximately a year old.
Any trial/inspection welcome.
Comes complete with chokes, key and original webley fitted hard case.
Great gun, £300. Face to face preferred, but will rfd at buyers cost.

All my guns are sold other than this one pal, I bought this semi a couple of months ago just for the odd day on the geese. Kayak fishing has taken over all my spare time now, and I think if I kept the guns, they would only see the light of day a few times a year. Good to hear from you, hope you have managed to get some shooting in over the winter

Would you shoot a runner?????
in Stalking & Game Shooting

It would be frowned upon shooting a runner from the line. In all honesty, every line I have been in, I would say 7 out of 10 would have dogs. One or two of which would be off the lead/peg and picking up a dead bird/chasing after a runner, or a young dog out on it's first shooting season, a little frisky, with an irate owner looking on as it's dog runs riot (not as rare as some may think!). I would definately say that safety is of paramount importance here, and the best course of action would be to watch the bird and mark it's direction of travel. Even if you miss the chance of a couple of overhead birds in doing so.
When the drive has finished, there would always be a few obliging beaters willing to pursue the injured bird with a few dogs, Chances are they will find the bird, and if you think about it, a running pheasant can certainly maintain some speed, so sending a couple of barrels it's way with the possibility of missing and endangering some fellows dog/beater would be quite an eye opener to the other's in the line and wouldn't be surprised if you were escorted off the shoot.
Of course, there will be mixed opinions on this, but on a formal shoot, think safety and etiquette. Someone will obviously bring about the argument about it being cruel not to atleast shoot at the runner, but if that was a prime concern, then you wouldn'e be shooting at a bird in the first place, do you kill everything you shoot at? And what about the pricked flyers.... Do you run after it trying to gun it out of the sky? Same principle.
