  1. Why are people so obsessed with taking thier air rifle to the absolute limit? One of the best rifles I have ever had was an AArms s410 .177. I would go up against anyone on a rabbit at 45yds. Deadly accurate and dropped them on the spot. When I eventually chrono'd it it was putting out 10.5 ftlbs. So why would I need to graze 12lbs with all the danger that goes with it? I also have a s410 in .22. The pellet drop on it was nothing like the other .22 air rifles I have had. It took out rabbits like a .22 rimmy and when I chronoed it it was 9.5 ftlbs. After stripping a rebuilding it to do an overhaul, I set the power at 11.5 and whilst I haven't used it on quarry since, the pellet trajectory is so loopy that I am seriously considering turning it back down for greater accuracy. At 9.5-10ftlbs, the damage the accupells were doing to the target media I was using would stop any airgun quarry.

Stay within the legal limit, 10ftlbs is fine and concentrate on the accuracy.

I completely agree with your logic about power. No need to graze the limit. 10 is fine. Accuracy is everything. I don't understand how your trajectory became more loopy after increasing the power 'though ? More power, faster pellet, less drop over any given range. Or are you just saying the accuracy dropped. In which case, yes, I'd rather have 9.5 with accuracy than 11.5 and some uncertainty on where the pellet's hitting.

  2. the difference is i would eat wildlife that someone had shot,I wouldn't want to eat someone elses roadkill

Why not? I was brought up on roadkill, and I still pick it up whenever I can. Had several pheasants and a partridge this winter. Often it's in great condition. If it's a bit battered then it just goes in the pressure cooker for stew, rather than a roast.

I saw a muntjac by the road recently and I was on my way to visit mum. I nearly picked it up, but I though not even mum would pick up a deer. I told her about it and she said "Oh, you should have picked it up. I bet we could have got some meat off it". Great having a mad old country lady for a mother. I think she's still in WW2 rationing mentality, but I approve.

  3. bought a mrk 1 escort 1300 gt bright orange for £100 quid in 1987 it was minted ran it for 3 years and sold it for £600 would be worth thousands now :cry1: :cry1:

I'd love one of those. My first car was a mk2 (500 quid), but yes, you could buy a mk1 for 70 quid in the mid 80s.

  4. I look at this site everyday but rarely post.

Personally I think it's has far to many nasty posts, everyone is happy to stereotype/generalise as long as we don't do it about anyone with a air rifle/SGC/FAC....

Terms like "fudge packing Muslims" are imhb pathetic.

    Waiting for the fall out........-

I love PW, and I really enjoy reading and talking about shooting and country sports. But I do get saddened when the people who I have much in common with (country sports, shooting) so freely give racist or otherwise unpleasant comments.

PW is the only place (real or virtual) where I really come across this. Most people I know would think that the racism etc. on PW is unacceptable and shocking.

I also think it's a shame that shooting, which gets a bad press at the best of times, gets tainted by association.

I have been put off PW a few times by unpleasant threads, but I'm still here for the moment because most of the discussion more than makes up for the bad stuff.

  5. Has anyone tried eating one? I have heard they are nice. I'd certainly have a go if I ever shot one.

I see loads on the canal I live on near Heathrow but shooting on the mooring is definitely off limits, so it's not very likely I'll get the chance.

  6. Is the bubble wrap just an insulator to keep the frost off? Like covering your fruit blossom on a frosty night?

I was surprised that there were so many frogs in there, because, as you say, I would expect them to be hiding under a rock somewhere hibernating.

I don't have a filter. It's just a low-tec goldfish pond with a low stocking density. I haven't checked the nitrates etc. for years, but I don't expect there to be a problem because the fish look fine and healthy.

  7. I often thought that Jeremy Clarkson would be a good article writer for one of the shooting mags. That's they type of person we need.

Clarkson: "James May will be showing vegetarians how to shoot driven pheasants, Hammond will be shooting a 4 bore shoulder mounted punt gun. At crows. And I will shoot the biggest bag of pigeons. IN THE WORLD."

  8. Anyone got any views on melting the ice with hot water containers? I've always done it, but not so much this year because I've heard on the telly a couple of times that it's not necessary. Maybe not a fish killer, but possibly a frog killer if you don't do it?

  9. I lost all my fish 7 in total had them 15 years.one of them was about 5lb in weight.I am a bit gutted really as they have survived other winters.I was away and my wife had trouble to keep the ice off the pond and temprature was down to -12

I lost 2 fish as well. Just goldfish, but it was a shame. Probably poor water quality because of the dead frogs. I've done a big water change.

  10. Just fished 12 dead frogs out of my pond. What is likely to have killed them? I was wondering if they ran out of air when it was frozen over. About 6 of them were all in one corner as though they were trying to get out.

  11. How many of us have heard the antis spreading misinformation saying that only a tiny proportion of pheasants are eaten and that shoots just bury the carcases?

How many of them are vegies?

How many of them eat fish?

    Everything about this is wrong.

  12. i think what your man is trying to say is that when the muslim protesters where at wooton basset screaming murderers and numerous racial hatred banters to our returning soliers alive and dead also when they stood in the capital of this country on the 11/11 burning the poppy the symbol of those lost in battle or defending us, where any of them arrested let alone jailed, can anyone answer that one, as far as the **** with the exstinguisher i think he got what he deaserved. matt

However distasteful those actions may be, they are not in the same league as the actions of this nutter that essentially amount to attempted murder. Had any of those muslim protesters done anything that deliberately tried to kill or seriously injure policemen then you can be sure as hell they would be in prison now. And if our 'student' had only shouted offencive remarks and burned symbols of capitalism, like lots of other protesters that day, then nobody would have heard of him. He wasn't just badly behaved, offensive or unpleasant. He tried to kill or seriously injure people. I think he got off lightly.

  13. I saw a jackdaw today feeding on a fatball in the garden today. It landed on the branch that the fatball was hanging from (in a plastic net bag). It couldn't reach, so it grabbed the net in it's beak, lifted it up a bit and held it with a claw, lifted it up a bit more, held it with it's claw, and carried on until it could reach the food.

    Clever bird.

  14. I found a phone a few months back in the shared private car park outside my mates house. Looked at the numbers and no one obvious to call, so we looked at the pictures to see if my mate could recognise the owner because it seemed likely that the owner would be in the same block of houses. He didn't recognise anyone, but we were rewarded with a picture of the owner with her t*** out. We did eventually trace her and couldn't help smiling when she came to pick it up. :)

  15. Gig - Barry Harris (Jazz hard-bop pianist, played with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis etc. and lived with Thelonius Monk), at the Pizza Express in Soho. I was 5 feet away from him - best seat in the house.

Sporting event. BSB from Cadwell is always a favourite. I went early every year in the 90s.
