Thanks guys The more I learn, the more I want to learn!

Dare I ask why .22 centrefires and not .22 rimfires? Is it because the layout of the centrefire cartridge makes it able to withstand higher pressure and therefore centrefires can be higher velocity, aka better killing power? NB: I am aware this may have been yet another stupid question :o

Does anyone think there's likely to be a review of legal calibres now that smaller deer species are becoming more widespread? Or would that be too logical...

Thank you for this background - that more or less tells me exactly what I wanted to know

Thanks all - interesting. So basically there's no readily accepted fact behind this legislation? I was curious as to the reasons behind the legalities... I will take a look at the Deer Act, thanks for the suggestion - can't hurt. Also am somewhat curious as to why my gender is cropping up in conversation about calibre, cockercas!

Hi all, Feel somewhat stupid asking a question that is most likely completely obvious to 99% of you on here - but I'm new and I'm learning, so go easy ;D Basically I've been trying to soak up as much info as I can about ballistics, and I found and watched the ballistics special (Norma episode) on Fieldsports TV. On it the presenter mentioned you can't shoot Roe with a .223 in the UK... can someone please explain (in basic terminology please!) why this is? Thanks

It means I tend to flit back and forth between Wales, Cheshire and Derbyshire - and Cheshire was in the middle! Haha, so all that's required is to be female and have a pulse in order to get hearts thumping?!!

I'm based Cheshire way. :yp:

Thanks all Artschool - nope, I don't think I'm any relation to vito the dog

Hi all, I've been around shooting all my life - have grown up learning from my Dad, who is a keen all round shooter (shotguns, rifles, air rifles) with a specific passion for pigeon shooting. Ever since I was young he's taught me (with varying degrees of success!) respect for the countryside and the various quarry species that inhabit it. I must admit that when I was younger, my interest in shooting waxed and waned, but increasingly as I've got older I have dabbled in target / rabbit shooting with an air rifle, and rough shooting (mainly pheasant) or clay shooting with shotguns. Now however, I've developed a strong interest and am starting out as a shooter myself. My main interest is pigeon / rough shooting. I don't yet have a license because I want to learn as much as I can about the sport of shooting as I can before I'm responsible for my own gun(s) - however, I'm still shooting whenever I can with my Dad's guns, under supervision. I figured pigeonwatch was a good place to come to start soaking up all the knowledge I can - especially on the logistics / ballistics side of things. I've been lurking on here for a while(!) but recently my thirst for knowledge has grown a lot, so I decided to join up... So here's fair warning that I will probably be a pain in the butt with questions for you all V
