So the lady is happy for you to use a rifle, the bullets for which are lethal at over a mile and not a shotgun, the pellets for which would not be lethal at 40m?
The issue with the shotgun is noise!
-
You haven't described the size and/or nature of the ground. As the lady has reservations and you have had to question the range of a rimfire, one could get the impression that the area is not too big. Sometimes, just sometimes, it is more beneficial for all concerned (even you in the long term) if action is taken to prevent any reservations becoming a problem. If you have any doubts at all about the acreage suitability, then as (from your signature) you do not have one, a recommendation that a suitably powered air rifle would be better and you do know of a responsible, insured friend who is better able to do the work. Job done. One very pleased, happy lady and one chuffed mate. The latter may just reciprocate the invitation and the former may just remember you to other land owners with a similar problem on more suitable land. I think it's called a win win situation.
Obviously, the above is a right load of old squit if you're actually talking about half of Wiltshire.
The question was,, to start with a bit general (should have read the box) as for the size of the area its about 125 acres but theres a house on the edge where she lives sometimes. She's just wary of any weapon really, I shot one near her house the other night when she was in (about 30 yards from her house) and she never heard a thing!

Is the landowner George Galloway
Sorry I'll get my coat....
On a serious note I would approach this by explaining backstops and safe shots etc, which would make a question about how far will they travel academic.
Yup thats what I did, shes still very wary though, sadly the majority of the rabbits are around the area of her house as opposed to the fields that she owns (good from my perspective as I don't have to walk far!) They've made a right mess of her garden. She doesn't live at the house permanently so I have agreed that I will only shoot that area when shes not in!

Indeed it does, dangerous to 1.5 miles! Many thanks.

Hi guys I have just picked up a new rabbi shooting permission. The land owner is anti gun in as far as she is terrified of them but she realises that she has a rabbit problem. She has stipulated that there is to be no shotgun, so air rifle of rimfire only.
She was a little concerned about the rimfire in that it is a "proper bullet!" She asked me how far a bullet from the gun would go and what is the lethal range of it.
So my question to all the technical types:
1. How far will a .22 rimfire round travel?
2. What is the lethal range of the .22 rimfire round?

Sorry this item has been sold, got snapped up!

Just wondered if anyone could advise me on where I could get a slip to fit my Rim-fire. I have a slip but now that I have a bigger sight (x50) and a bipod on it, it doesn't fit!
-
Is that 16" including the mod,
-
Sorted; you can't beat a BRNO. Just needs chopping now.
Next on the list! How long should I go for?

Thanks for all the replies guys, I'm of to the CLA today for the whole weekend so I will take a look and maybe get a deal. Many thanks.

I'm looking at getting a bipod for my rimfire, but I'm seeing that they come in different heights. What an deal height for one please guys. Don't want anything massively expensive.
-
Thanks guys!
-
OK thanks, so whats it for?

Newbie question I'm afraid. I just brought some Sports Match Scope Mounts and found that one of the mounts has a small lug that can be inserted into a hole in the mount, what's it for please?
-
Just brought a second hand Hawke Eclipse 3-9 x 50 sight for mu rimfire and although the rear sight has been removed the gun, the housing still remains (and cant be removed) as a result I need to get higher mounts/extensions.
Does anyone know where I might be able to get some please?

Hi Dadrew
Give James Gibb gunsmiths a ring he will shorten recrown and rethread your rifle for £40 he is in Shoshcombe near bath tell him Geordie gave you his number 01761436827.And get a selection of different makes of ammo, rifles often like certain makes of ammo better.I am ex squaddy too. I live at Erlestoke so not too far if you want to have a go with a bipod before you buy one give me a shout.
Geordie
Thanks mate, I have a permission in that neck of the woods, out towards Market Lavington

To be fair the only bad way to assess things is to discount any shot that went bad ie. turn a 5 shot group into a three or four.
Sometimes I even fire two shots at a series of progressively further ranges when assessing ammo.
Why do you say its a bad way to assess things, to discount a bad shot, If you know it was a bad shot i.e. elbow slipped, you snatched at the trigger or whatever, but the other four were tight....
I will just add that this was the last group I fired on that day and was the first time I had fired the gun ever, so still getting used to it.
I haven't fired a .22 in 30 years and haven't fired a rifle in 14 years since leaving the army. I shot at Bisley in the army championships when I first joined up so don't consider myself a bad shot, just out of practice. The group will get tighter with time and practice.

- Position and Hold must be firm enough to support the weapon
- Weapon should point naturally at the target.
- Sight alignment must be correct.
- Shot must be released and followed through with any physical effort
that takes me back
Frightned me that I could still remember it!

From a newbie perspective, I was exactly the same as you, still am to an extent but I'm learning!
Thing that helped me was to slow down, every time I saw a bird, I would be up, BANG, miss, as soon as it was over the pattern.
Now I wait for it to commit to the pattern, its wings break, its eyes are on the landing zone, slowly stand and bring the gun up over the net, eyes focused on the bird, track on to it, BUM, BELLY, BEAK, BANG!

check the scope is OK before you go replacing it
4x is fine for 50yds
60yd zero leaves a slight high spot around 30-35 IIRC
50-55 is better for point and shoot to 60-65
http://www.gunsmoke.com/guns/1022/images/22subsonic_plot.gif
what was your firing position like on those shots?
eliminate you from the equation
use a bipod/bag, box, rest etc
get someone else to shoot that same set up
flyers happen but a 6" flyer at 60yds is extreme unless position is not firm
The scope is fine, just want a more powerful one (My eyes aren't as powerful as they once were!).
Firing position was fine, my intention is to get a bi-pod in the near future. The last round isn't a "flyer" as you put it, it was down to me, as I squeezed the trigger, it felt all wrong, should have aborted the shot and set it up again, in hind sight. I tried applying the same marksmanship principles as I did when I was shooting 7.62 mm SLR's in the army.
