  1. Another vote for Aigle here. Tried Hunters and Le Chameaus. Loved Hunters but the quality went downhill dramatically. Le Chameaus were really comfortable and I did a lot of miles in them but they only lasted a year. Aigles were cheaper and a bit bigger fitting but they are as good and solid today as day one.

  2. Hi all, intrigued by the new Lincoln Vogue for rough shooting, but no local stockists. There aren't any reviews around yet as far as I can tell so I was just wondering if anyone seen one / handled one / bought one? Any feedback? The nominal weight given is 3.05kg / 6lb 11oz in 12 bore, 28 inch barrels which sounds nice to carry and potentially quite lively. Thanks in advance, Dan

  3. My 525 (Feb 16) always has a very fine surface rust on the standing breech and the breech ends of the barrels. Rubs off very easily so I just keep it as well oiled as possible and make sure it doesn't go back in the cabinet damp. All the other surfaces are very well finished and don't rust.

  4. Hull Imperial Game in 28g or 30g will be enough cartridge for just about anything and have fairly soft recoil. They work very well in my various 2.5in chamber guns at any rate. Most suppliers do a 'traditional game load' of 28g in a 65mm cartridge so you can't go too far wrong.

  5. I think Cogswell and Harrison were one of the few London makers, other than the very top ones, that could reasonably claim to be genuine London makers - as in they had a factory in London and did most of the work in house, I think I read (probably in one of Diggory Hadoake's books) that they only bought in the barrel tubes - possibly from Belgium.

If I remember correctly 'Avant Tout' describes the Cogswell variation of the standard Anson & Deeley boxlock that utilises a barrel-mounted coil spring ejector mechanism. There seems to have been loads of variations and Cogswell had lots of different named models, some of which were Avant Tout type and some not.

I particularly like the 'Extra Quality Victor' models with the engraved sideplates. Very nice.

If the OP gets a chance a pic or two would be appreciated - always nice to see an old English gun in use.

  6. I can't really see why this thread has gone the way it has. All that matters is that the two guns are very nice and as they have been given as heirlooms they ain't for sale so they only need a value for insurance purposes. Both guns are very well made with well struck off barrels.

I was merely trying to add a bit of info to the identity of the guns - I think that's half the fun of old English-made guns, as they can have a very complicated backstory with the name on the gun (especially in the case of the boxlock) having very little to do with the actual manufacturer.

  7. Webley & Scott made a huge number of guns for lots of different makers as well as their own production. I have a Trulock & Harriss that is a Webley & Scott A&W model boxlock.

A lot of the pre-War William Evans guns are Webley and Scott built.

That said neither of these guns quite rings true for me as a W&S. It is worth searching the barrels around the fore end loop for a serial number that doesn't match the gun's or for a maker's mark.

There's a copy of the 1914 W&S catalogue available online to compare against here

  8. WHY can't those who voted to stay in accept that they lost its called democracy dim wits

Erm, so if that's the case how come Leave have been campaigning against the EU for so long despite the UK's membership having been ratified in a previous referendum and effectively every General Election since joining the EEC?

As you say, it is a democracy and the minority have every right to express, and fight for, their viewpoint.

  9. I did not realise this, Why is this the case.?

Apparently there was an option to take part but it was turned down by our Government. No idea why - they probably just couldn’t be ***** with the hassle.

  10. We don’t get a vote in the Isle of Man, despite being a member of EU via the UK. Seems a bit unfair when a Brexit will probably hit us very hard. I think the Channel Islands are the same but I believe Gibraltar have a vote.

  11. I'm on the look out for a lightweight o/u game gun to replace/augment my sxs and I've spotted these. Look nice and secondhand prices are very tempting. However, I haven't been able to handle one. Is there anyone who has one, or had one, who can give me some feedback? Anything to watch out for, or any other relatively low cost lightweights I should consider?

    Thanks in advance

  12. Problem I find with some jackets is that although they're waterproof via the liner/membrane, in heavy rain the outer fabric absorb a lot of water making the coat heavy and lose it's thermal properties. Had this with Deerhunter Smallville and Hogg of Fife Sportsman jacket. Reading this post with interest.

Yep, I've been there. Had a 'waterproof' tweed-type shooting jacket that basically acted large flannel with a water resistant liner inside. Not only does it become extremely heavy and cold, the fabric outer prevents water from running off the liner so it speeds up the failure of the membrane. Not going down that route again. I want a waterproof that is waterproof first and foremost. I love my old Barbour Beaufort when it is first re-waxed because it sheds water quickly and doesn't get too heavy. I also love the big pockets, particularly the rear game pocket because I can fit in loads of dummies, leads, balls etc when I'm training the dog and I don't have to carry a separate bag. Only problem is it needs re-waxing very regularly now and I'd like to get something similar in a more resilient material for very wet weather. The Barbour will still be my 'go to' choice when the weather's a bit more clement because it fits like only an old Barbour can.

I'm really struggling to find something the fits the bill so I'm very grateful for all the suggestions and advice so far.
