  1. Took junior and the dog out for a quick watch on an wheat field where the pigeons had done some damage. We was only out for 30 min but managed to get one and a good retrieve from the dog. She is developing really good. The pigeons was flying on a rape field next door so I guess it will be action as soon as they start to harvest.

  3. Thanks for the comments guys! I just love pigeon hunting. It could be very challenging and very easy sometimes. And it is nice to see your dog work and grow every time you are out there. Still waiting for the perfect day when you get a lot of birds coming in and you know that you are on the right spot at the right time. And the meat is a real treat.

  4. We came out late this sunday afternoon but we manage to get 7 birds fooled by the decoys. The dog was working really well and my shooting was good also with 4 birds and Anders 3. We had a lot of birds flying but they was hitting the trees on the other field :unhappy::unhappy:. Well, we will get out earlier next time and now we know the flightlines.

  5. A good bird to use if you can get them are ducks and teal. The feathers are probably the tightest of any bird a gundog will get familiar with. Good advice from the others though I'd avoid feral pigeons because they are often very dirty.

I use teal and ducks when we train, they work perfect and she loves to collect and retrieve them. I think that the biggest problem are that she gets so excited over the shooting, decoys and dropping birds so she can't get control over herself. It feels that she isn't mentally mature for pigeons at the moment.

  6. wow that takes me back ...my lad couldn't wait to get the pigeons home and cook one or two .....was that a glass of red or white he had on the side there !!!!!

looks like he's more Keith Floyd than Gordon Ramsey !!!!!!!!!

Ha ha! It was the wifes empty glass of rosè!! I hade a nice glass of Zinfandel to my breast, a great combo.

  7. Well done Eklind, the first of many pigeon shooting reports from you hopefully.

Thanks mate! I am pretty new to decoying pigeons but I am reading a lot on this forum and learning a lot being out on the fields watching how the birds behave etc.

  8. I needed to come out to the fields yesterday after work and the son was with me and he got to see daddy shot pigeons for the first time.

I tried out bamboo canes with full body decoys in a high oatfield, also placed a floater/bouncer a bit back to imitate a incoming bird. I didn´t manage to get in my hide before the first bird was coming in and I shot it hiding in the high grass. More pigeons was coming in, fooled by the decoys on the bamboo sticks and in a short time I shot a good bunch of birds. The son was thrilled and collected the birds as the golden retriever got totally mad and was passed to sit in the hide. When we got home Emil decided that we should eat one of the pigeons so he helped me out with the breast and also checked out what the pigeons was feeding on, this bird had eaten a lot of rapeseed. He found it very intressting and it was cool to learn and show him how it all works. from shot to the plate so to say.

  9. It sounds like the idea will work, but is over complicated and unnecessarily expensive.

Normal garden bamboo canes will do the same job. Either fit a full bodied decoy to the top, or insert a cradle to the cane and add a dead bird or as i often do, just simply insert a 4-5 ft bamboo cane up the backside of a dead bird up into it's skull, then push into the ground at an angle.

You can spread the wings by pushing a 8" stick through the body under the wings and nottching the flight feathers into the stick, but it's normally not necessary to spread the wings.

So thanks for the tip about full body decoys on bamboo sticks, worked perfectly.

  10. Try not to put her on wood pigeon for now if it worries her. Their feathers are much looser and come out easier. If she's fine picking other birds then i wouldn't worry about Woodpigeon until she's a bit more experienced. You can put them in a sock, pair of tights etc but when picked in a shooting scenario those horrid fluffy feathers are still going to come out....

Thanks for the Quick reply bigbird! I got a tip from a friend who puts rubberband around the wings to get them tight around the body of the bird. That seems to help. If a have a new shot pigeon in my hand and give the bird to the dog and say "fetch" she takes the bird in her mouth and holds it fine until I say l "release" and she gives me the bird. I Think that she is a bit excited about the whole situation. A lot of birds, shots and more.

  11. I have a golden retriever who is two years old. She love to retrieve ducks and geese both on land and in water. The biggest issue is with pigeons. She picks them up and carry them but then she seems to be frustrated about all the feathers and she spit it out and starts to pick of the feathers. She has no problems with wet pigeons who has been frozen. Can you guys give me some tips of training with pigeons? Best regards/Carl

  12. The pigeon will almost certainly prefer rape seed over peas once the rape has been harvested .

Your peas look like harvest peas , the drier they get the more will fall out onto the ground and once harvested may attract good numbers of pigeon , on the other hand they may not.

It's really just a case of keeping a eye out on all the fields and shoot it when good numbers are present.

Thanks for the reply, will keep an eye on the fields

  13. I am currently shooting a lot over fodder peas that will be harvested soon and the pigeons are all over them.

Mostly feeding first thing in the morning and late afternoon into the evening.

The best thing to do is watch the fields and see if the pigeons are visiting.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I will give it a try on wednesday afternoon. I started to work today but I might be able to take the car out there on my lunch to check it out. Thanks for the tip!!

  14. Is there a large population of pigeons in the area?

That crop looks to be over mature. If there are pigeons soon after harvest might be a good time as there may well be a lot of spillage of peas.

Not the whole fields are mature, mostly out on the edges. There is a lot of pigeons all over the lands where I live, a lot of farmers everywhere. But they have been eating oat, barley and also rapeseed as I shot a few birds last week. The crops are a few weeks late here in Sweden due to a cold and wet summer. The farmers have started to harvest barley and rapeseed at the moment.

  15. Hi guys!

I am from Sweden and pretty new to pigeon hunting, started last season but it I like it, a lot of fun and you get nice meat to the table and you help the farmers out. I have got two new fields to hunt on, both with peas and they started to get mature. But I don't see a lot of pigeons feeding there at the moment, when can I expect them to feed? I saw three there this afternoon, maybe more will come in the next few days? Or should I look for other crops? I post som pics of the fields and the crops.

    Best regards

    Carl
