Out again today and slowly beginning to realise that this might be my last year on the Squizzers - increasing muscle wastage and Arthritis are making my forays more and more difficult so with a good dose of steroids and painkillers I forced myself into the car and off to the woods. Last 2 txt's from the  man in charge reports that all Hoppers are still being emptied but I only had the strength to visit the first 2 that I came to so I should be happy that these 2 produced 3 kills - 3 shots and 3 stone dead on the floor, all small and scrawny but a Squirrel is a Squirrel so at least it was worth the effort.

Oh mate sorry to hear . You need to recruit a protege or apprentice to help you out but good to hear that you are carrying on the good work.        Have you worked out how far they are coming from ?           Last conversation that we had you were surprised that they were making it as far as your wood.        All the best, SS

  2. 52 weeks of the year. They disperse from breeding areas April May and August September so you get loads moving through your perms that don't stop for more than a day to feed. So kill them as you see them ; some people talk about leaving some for future sport but they are not like rabbits. They set up residence for the Winter in area that they have stashed food in to keep them going till this time of year. Autumn is when they collect food and gorge themselves to build up body fat so easiest time of year to shoot them in large numbers if you target the natural food trees eg hazel, oak, sweet chestnut, horse chestnut. Sycamore gets them foraging on the ground all Winter and this time of the yearon the buds. Hope this helps

  3. When my son was a toddler Nana would take him to a local park with a small fishing lake in it so that he could watch the men fishing and feed the ducks. Sometimes there was a heron that would stand on the opposite bank to the people and do his own fishing. My son was fascinated with the heron. One day when he was five he walked around the lake/pond and got within 20ft of the heron and lay down to watch it. He then spent an hour crawling up to the bird with the fishermen and Nana all saying that the heron would soon fly off . My son got so close that he stretched his arm out and stroked the back of the heron and then crawled back in reverse. The bird just looked at him and then turned round back to his fishing.   Not a shooting story but certainly one of appreciating wildlife and fieldcraft.

As always a cracking shot you have taken GG thanks for sharing.

  4. Ultrastu 1st time that I have heard you mention sectional density . I am struggling to find squirrels at the moment but got three magpies with .22 Powapels this afternoon, Walker 570 has interested me in Webley Mosquito Express as they are only.05 of a grain heavier than Accupel or Powapel

  5. DC 177 I am so pleased that you have started to suck them in to your killing ground at home. It really increases your kill rates as you are at home more than any other permission.

How many of these extra kills have you got and since when please ?

  6. 1/4 of a mile is no distance for them.

Cars might give you a hand if you scatter some peanuts on that busy A road.

Keep feeding them and see how many you get mate try different feed to see which is the most popular.

I think that we are even more keen than you are to see how you are doing lol

  7. 3 Last Wednesday forgot to post. Then at another location that I couldn't shoot at I saw a female gathering leaves to change the bedding at last light , each time she ventured out from the drey ( well hidden in ivy choaked massive sycamore) her kits went frantic and sounded like a flock of birds  she must have a big litter and they sounded almost ready to leave.
