pete1dart
After the birth of my son last Wednesday, it has virtually stopped all my pigeon shooting. Im not complaining but i maybe should have planned a little better! Right in the middle of harvest!!!! I managed to sneak out on an all day pass from the mrs. The plan was to drop her off at her mums then up to the farm with my old man and hopefully get onto some pigeons that had been hitting the pea stubble. After a bit of faffing about, i arrived at the farm @ around 1200. Not ideal but it would do. Just as i came through the farm gate i was stopped by the farmers wife. A very nice lady who congratulated me on the birth of Harry. My boss then came running out and also congratulated me and then told me that the Partridge would be coming in on Thursday. Not ideal considering the pens were only half done. That was it for my pigeon shooting for the day i thought! So off me and dad went with our mate and started to put the pens up. We didnt finish untill 1800ish. All day i had been watching a few drop into the pea stubble and was getting more and more anctious to get over there and give them a crack. But the pens were more important. I decided i would give the field a go and just grabbed 8 decoys out the car and headed to the bale hide i had put out when they were first drilled. I used my trusty horse shoe pattern and just hoped for the best. I had set up by 1830 and knew i would probably have only an hour at best. The first birds that came round were high and fast and not interested in decoying. They made for very challanging shots on the bit off wind that had decided to pick up. I dropped the first 2 with 2 shots. Then they started to decoy a little. It is a shame i didnt have more time as they were dropping into the field along a hedgeline. If i was up there today i would probably have a half decent shoot i was thinking to myself! I was only getting the odd bird to come in out of the clouds that were dropping in on the hedgeline, but the ones that were coming in were not getting away. After a couple of days shooting very ordinary i was back on song and ended the hour long session on 15 pigeons for 20 shots. Probably my best ever shot ratio. I am going to try and sneak out again tomorrow afternoon now that the bit of rain will have softened the peas up a bit, it could well be worth an ear bashing from her who must be obeyed!!!!! Cheers, Pete
Hendo
Congratulations on the birth of your son,it wont be long until he joins you in the pigeon hide. I had a good couple of hours on Protein peas this week and shot 40 woodpigeons, they have been working this field for a while and it was just getting the time and the weather conditions just right for the job. Hoping to get back out next week. Hendo

pete1dart
I cant just go out once a year soreshoulder!!!!! My mind would have turned to mush by then! Its hard enough waiting for 1st September to come around!!! I never did get out and have another go at them. My dad went out and had 11 out of the same bale hide. He sent his mate up the hedgeline where they had been pouring in. He had 19 for 95 shots Ohh well. Hopefully i will get out and have 1 more go over the wheat or barley stubble!
