Firearms inquiry deadline extended

2nd September 2010….……………………………………………….immediate release

The deadline for submissions to the Home Affairs Select Committee inquiry into firearms law has been extended after an overwhelming number of individuals tried to submit evidence.

BASC was alerted to problems with the Committee’s computer systems, which appear to have crashed as the original deadline approached on Friday August 27th, meaning many people may have been prevented from getting their evidence in on time. Shooting Times has confirmed the problems and received an assurance from the Home Office that the deadline will now be extended to accommodate the technical glitch. BASC is urging anyone who has not yet responded to take advantage of this extra time to make a submission.

BASC spokesman Simon Clarke said “"The huge number of responses sent in to the Home Affairs Select Committee matches our experience of replies copied to BASC and we believe it is a reflection of the seriousness with which everyone who shoots is treating this inquiry. Given the apparent failure in the email systems used to collect responses, it is right that the Committee will consider evidence sent in after the initial deadline. Anyone who has not yet taken the time to send in a response should do so quickly and a guide to submitting evidence can be found on the BASC website www.basc.org.uk "
