matthic
Hi Guys, I've got hold of a single barrel to have a go at re finishing a stock, so to start with I've sanded it right back to a nice smooth finish, then cleaned it all down to remove and dust etc. That all went well, with a bit of work! I then started on palming oil into it round and round until it gets warm, Ive been at it for ages and the only places that seem to take on the oil is on the edges where the grain is more open. I've then decided to get some wood stain to darken the wood, oil based, having applied it it now looks very nice but after leaving it for a few days I then re oiled, basicaly rubbed it all off!!! Its a Baikal and thinking that it may have been tanalised or somthing when the gun was made, just dont know. Any help would be great, as I dont want to have it warnished. BigG
Did you raise the grain then seal the wood? It sounds like it is taking in too much oil. You can find some good threads on how to do this, do a quick search on stock refinishing. Search for Straighshooter1 posts, he is very knowledgeable.
