ziplex
The Pointer had a tiny Tick on her and being as we couldn't find the 'Tick tool' decided to glob a lump of vaseline on it....couldn't find that either so I put a smear of Magnesium Sulphate on it instead. Seemed to work like a charm as the following morning the Tick was well and truly dead, shrivelled up and more or less fell of complete. Is it advisable to use this again? the Pointer didn't seem to mind...it's caused her no distress/itching BTW.
apache
I would recommend the O tom tick removers but I can't see anything wrong with mag sulphate. Might irritate sensitive skin but has been used for years as a safe astringent.

(as with most things that get put 'in the drawer') so we tried the mag sulphate and it worked like a charm...'orrible little creature resembled a dried prune the following morning and just dropped of with a gentle prod, (I hate the damn things). Good to know it's safe as I sort of guessed, just wanted to make sure! thanks.
