Recommended Posts

i recieved this email the other day! so for anyone up north who shoots on the coast between sunderland and hartlepool should read below, if you havent already recieved this email. :good:

BASC alert - coastal access - Sunderland to Hartlepool‏

I would not be troubling you with this unless I thought that your shooting might be affected.

Natural England is developing proposals for a coastal path from South Bents (the north end of the stretch, near Sunderland) to Seaton Carew (the south end of the stretch, near Hartlepool).

This project is at Stage 1 of a lengthy process. At this stage Natural England are gathering information. From around August onwards they will then start meeting landowners, occupiers and others with an interest in each parcel of land potentially affected. Now is the time for people with shooting interests to get involved. Shooting interests could include clay pigeon shooting, airgun and rifle range shooting, pest control, deer stalking, game shooting, rough shooting and wildfowling.

If you, or anyone you know, shoots or has sporting rights on coastal land between South Bents and Seaton Carew please contact BASC for advice by emailing coastalaccess@basc.org.uk or by phoning 01244 573019.

BASC members can call on our advice at any time during this project.

When the coastal access related legislation was made under the last Government, BASC successfully persuaded Defra to place a duty on Natural England to take account of sporting rights on the coast. BASC worked to ensure that the Coastal Access Scheme took account of the needs of shooting. As a result this guidance contains a detailed explanation of the approach Natural England will take in places where there are shooting interests.

In the event of a disagreement BASC also secured a right of appeal to the Secretary of State for people with sporting rights over affected land. BASC is the only shooting organisation named in the relevant regulations. This will help BASC to safeguard shooting interests if the consultation process fails to take account of them.
