A mixed little evening

Went up the farm yesterday after work to pick up and clean the pheasant feeders and drinkers ready for the birds arrival. I knew my old man and his mate would already be up there as I had seen 200 pigeons hitting a wheat field on Sunday, with plenty in the trees and a nice little flight line coming over from our neighbours wood. Well they had been up there since 1030 and only had 11 between them. Not a very good return for the amount of birds that are around. Apparantly they just flipped over to the neighbours field!

After the main job of washing up had been done decided to go for a little walk round for a rabbit or two for the pot. We have got a few grass fields that are cut and waiting to be bailed. The pigeons are hitting these like crazy in the evenings and there were around 50 on each last night. After walking around I had managed to down 2 Pigeons and a stupid young crow that decided to come my side of the hedge! Thought I had better start making my way back to the car as the time was getting on and it was that weired time of day when the light cant make its mind up what it wants to do!

Got down to the drier barns and started walking up the side of a hedge where i can normally down a couple of pigeons. Just so happened to take a glance to my left where one of the grass fields has been cut. I could see something moving on the other side of the field it looked a bit 'foxy' but i have had the light play tricks on my eyes before! Decided it would be worth a squeak, as the wind was in my favour for a change. Couple of mins of squeaking and the dark shape started working its way across the lines but further up the field. Thought I had lost it but decided to keep squeaking any way. Then it vanished in the longer grass that was cut 3 weeks ago and has now sprouted up quickly with the showers we have had.

Carried on calling and had given up all hope, when through the grass I could see it bounding towards me around 50 yards out. I let it come a little closer untill around 25 yards away. Gave it a squeak and by this time it had stopped and was sitting up looking straight at me! I raised the gun which she saw but instead of turning away, she went straight for the hedge i was on. BANG, 30 grams of 6 shot clear pigeon through my old faithfull silver pigeon and she was down!

Controversial, I know, but I am not going to put any of my 50g Magnum BB through my little game gun again. Cost me £249 the last time i did! Went to pick her up, a nice little vixen cub shot just behind the shoulder and in the head. Perfect. That will save a few of my pheasant and Partridge! But I am going to have a look for the rest of her family. The Mrs will love that!

Long winded Pete!
