Hello i have a 6 month springer spaniel. I thought training was going well but i now relaise i need to go back and redo sit, stay and here. My problem is i have a lab who is not gundog trained or trained in any way up till now my springer has been allowed outside most of the day with the lab just running around the garden.Im wondering would this be classed as free hunting and is it making the dog ignore me.I was trying to teach him quatering before i relaised he wasnt as good with sit stay and here and while trying to teach the quatering he would start looking around and running off. Also were abouts in training should i be for a 6 month old rough shooting springer be ?

Right at the beginning so don't worry about it.

But you want the dog to be "with you", it sounds like yours reckons your lab is more fun than you, which is not a good thing. I would separate them and taken them out separately so the pups fun time is with you.

Work on the basics from there.

I have 2 springers and I had to train mine separately as they were more interested in each other. This is expected from a young dog but if you put the time in she will come along nicely. From my experience I also found that you master a simple command like stay, then next month she's forgotten it, don't be disheartened by this it happens to a lot of us.

A friend told me training a springer will break your heart and boy it did, 2 years later I have 2 fantastic working dogs, they will sit at a peg, flush, retrieve, they are very obedient.

Keep at it and best of luck :good:
