woodcock1
While out shooting woodcock at the weekend it dawned on me that there was a small river 1-2m wide along the side of the ground I was on. Occasionally this holds the odd duck. The more I looked round me I was surrounded by water. Drains, streams, puddles ditches and dykes. It would be almost impossible to put yourself anywhere in Ireland out of shot range of water!!! This is the department of environment definition of wetland “wetlands are areas of marsh, fen, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt, including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six metres.” Should we be using lead shot at all??? When is a wetland not a wetland?
