lollipop
Thinking about using a hopper on the back of the quad to feed the birds in the gamecrop and woods as opposed to keep filling feeders. Does anyone feed this way? Are there any advantages to feeding this way? or is feeding the traditional way via feeders the best method? I'd be interested to know. It would give me opportunity to utilise my feeders around other places like hedgerows.
duke hamish
Its a good way of keeping your birds heads down and whear you want them but its hard to know how much food to put down, not enough and they wander for food, to much and you waste food plus its very time consuming! Was thinking about using feeders then feeding with the hopper and throwing some medicinal grit around a couple of days before the shoot. Guest ChrisP
Yeah we do it, its called spin feeding. As you spin the wheat you whistle (dog whistle) and after a few days the birds relate the noise to food. So they come running. One of the main advantages of spinning is that you can see how many birds you have, unlike hoppering where you top up and leave it. It Is also good as you can gradually move the birds towards the cover crop before the season starts, then keep feeding the cover crop for the rest of the year. The only disadvantage is that it is very time consuming and proper spinners cost a lot of money. You can get them from places like solway feeders. Good luck, and If you do this next season make sure to start spinning and keep doing it, dont suddenly switch to just hoppers as the birds will then take a while to learn how to use them.
