Man-o-woods
I am currentley re-finishing the stock on my 687 EL gold pigeon. the bulk of the work in complete and i am very pleased with the outcome. during the oil finishing i covered the checkering with masking tape so as not to get oil buildup on it. Question is do i now apply oil to the checkering to finish the job, If so how many coats would be advisable. M-O-W
fo5ter
If you're worried about buildup maybe you're using he wrong type of oil? I've done fair few and you can find some of them on this forum. I've never masked the chequering - it still needs the same finish as the rest. How are you applying the oil? You want to rub just enough to cover it all and apply it with your hands, rubbing until friction heats up your hands and the oil is more or less dry. Give it 24 hours, lightly once over with very fine wire wool and repeat the oiling. About 5 layers should do the trick And put up some photos!
