Reece
I understand that grey squirrel tails can be used for fly tying. I have also been told that it is possible to sell tails for a cheap price to some businesses. Is this true or not?
Pykie
It is I shoot and trap on average 300 squirrels a year so it's nice to get something for them. I sell mine to Veniard. Type it into google and find their address and price list Edited December 13, 2012 by Pykie

Do they accept them all year round or just at certain times? I don't have any tails at the moment, but I will when I start the annual cull in the spring. Pykie
Anytime. I usually get about fifty together then send them. They pay you back the postage too

Also, would keeping them in a freezer be good enough for preserving them at home while you gather a collection to send off? EDIT: And how much do you get per tail? Pykie
All I do is cut off the tail, leave them to dry in a fly proof area and then box them in a 250 size cartridge box. No special treating is needed at all I was getting 25p each but it's gone down to 17p now. Least it covers the cost of the shotgun cartridge. Reece
How long do I need to leave them to dry and how do I know when they're dry enough?
Pykie
Well they just go hard and dried out. No meat etc on the tail so nothing to rot. As I said, just keep them out the way of flies and you will be fine. I would give it bout four days just to be sure and keep them fairly straight
Reece
OK thanks. Really wish I heard of this before I went and got 88 squirrels this year. Think I'll email them later in the year when I start the annual cull.
