Description

For sale is an original flintlock trade musket made late 1700s/early 1800s.

The gun has a 51 inch barrel which is hexagonal at the breech end and cylindrical for the remainder of its length, and is full stocked with a club/roach belly stock.

The good points are that the lock is fully working, and produced a good spark when a flint was fitted, although the frizzen is a little soft with age. It would be a simple job to have this rehardened. This, combined with the good wall thickness mean that the gun could be put onto SGC and used as a shooting gun.

The bad points are that the ramrod is missing, and the stock has been badly refurbished at some point, including the removal of a portion of the bottom of the butt including part of the butt plate. There is also a slight downward bend in the barrel at the muzzle end - this could easily be trued up.

Guns such as these were exported for use by colonists both as hunting and self-protection weapons, being designed to use both shot and ball as required.

This gun would make a good wall hanger, being off-ticket, or an even better head turner if it were added to a ticket and used!
