Defra has confirmed today (10 January 2008) that three wild mute swans have been found with the H5N1 strain of bird flu at Abbotsbury Swannery, a sanctuary located nine miles from Weymouth, Dorset.

A Wild Bird Control Area (3km) and Monitoring Area (10km) have been established around the premises. The shooting of birds has been banned in the 3km and 10km zones while the epidemiological investigation is carried out. Deer stalking and the shooting of mammals for pest control purposes can continue.

Inside these areas if you are catching up or have laying stock you are required to house these birds or otherwise isolate them from contact with wild birds, bird movements will be restricted, and bird gatherings are banned.

All people involved nationwide with avian flu sampling should stop sampling until further notice.
