  1. Let us clarify this thing about Islam being the religion of peace. What is actually meant by this is that some believe that IF the laws and practices laid out in the Koran are fully abided by, this will lead to peace. Yes, that is the stonings, the beatings, the beheadings, the removal of limbs, the wholesale slaughter of non-believers etc etc. In other words - if everyone in the world follows my religion exclusively and does exactly what I say, according to the book, there will be peace.

Absolute obedience at the point of a sword is not peace, it is a dictatorship.

    BUT!

I do believe the vast majority of UK moslems practice their religion peacefully in the same way that many christians ignore the more bizarre and violent behaviour in the old testament and have the nous to interpret their beliefs in a modern and law abiding way. Religious fundamentalism of any flavour that leads to violence, murder and persecution is clearly a step too far and very probably a form of mental illness, but it is not exclusive to Islam.

If anything good has come out of this it is the unequivocal statement today from the Moslem Council fella, publicly and powerfully condemning this incident in the strongest possible terms. A bit more of that and we can move the fight on from the pointless "us decent white British folks vs. the moslems" to "decent people of all faiths/non faiths vs.the lunatics"

Oh, and welcome/thanks to Carruthers, more sense in those few posts than many members will ever manage, stay safe & come back soon.

  2. Its being suggested that he was trying to close a door that was not shut properly and fell out.

    A completely plausible reason.

    Hmmm.

How many times have you fallen out of a stationary car whilst shutting the door? Or even felt in danger of doing so?

And how much more difficult would it be when 70mph winds are trying to force the door closed?

Now, if this was some sort of incident involving Mr Michael's rear tailgate I would find it more believable

    :whistling:

  3. Thanks all. I've tried the wire weaving method and it is just as backbreaking as the cable ties and tricky to get the tension right without bunching up the mesh. Think I will go for the sealey pliers and crimp them up afterwards.

  4. Hi all, I have just spent forever attaching lengths of chicken wire together with cable ties (about 90 metres of it, every 7cm) for a chicken run. It is boring and backbreaking and I have another 90M to go for the next one. I'm looking for a quick and simple alternative to the cable ties and the best solution I can come up with is a pair of automatic feed hog ring pliers. Trouble is I can only find rings that close to about a 7mm loop and ideally I'd like them to clamp up a lot tighter than this. Does anyone know where I can get a smaller gauge ring and pliers? Or any other thoughts?

    Cheers

  5. I bought a brand new "last season's colours" Spyder ski jacket for £25 a few years back. Retail they were about £450 so I was pretty convinced that it was a fake before it turned up but worth the risk for £25. I have looked it over inch by inch and can't spot any of the clues that normally confirm a fake from the real thing. After four seasons it has kept me toasty warm and is still in good nick so I was either very lucky and got a real one for peanuts, or the fakes are as good as the real thing.

  6. 10219 my best yet, got lucky with a post office and a red post box but still went for wales instead of scotland!

edit: 11342! best guess was less than 1km...but a very handy hotel sign gave that away!

There are some stunning parts of the world in some places you just wouldn't expect. I have a feeling I'm gonna be on that site all night!

  7. So a professional pub entertainer puts a bizarre story on facebook, it is picked up by that paragon of journalistic integrity The Sun and then he doesn't want to talk to anyone else in the media about it.

The police, very politely, deny it ever happened.

So, a cover up by the fuzz? Or a BS story in the first place?

    Come on people.

  8. God, where has common sense gone.

On the part of the police, or the media?

"It is understood that police were today “trying to establish” which officers may have spoken to the girl.

“We cannot currently trace any car being in the area at the time,” one source told The Daily Telegraph.

Mr Allen, who is known as Bob, was unavailable for comment today."

Could it be, could it possibly be, that the original report in The Sun was just a tiny bit made up?

  9. "'We are trying to trace the officers who are reported to have made this comment," a police spokesman said. "From the circumstances described, it would not appear to have been necessary to advise the young girl that chalking a hopscotch grid may be criminal damage and illegal."

    Panic Over.

  10. 1 more vote for Lancaster. Way cheaper than anyone else and not fussed about modifications. I converted a manual diesel 110 to an auto V8 and they weren't fussed at all, I paid £115 for TPFT with mileage limited to 3000 pa. If you are getting no quotes online it might be worth giving them a call.

  11. We use a lot at the club. They seem to vary quite a lot in 'power'. I've shot them on the ground and some leave a 2 inch deep crater, some just go pop. Most are louder than a 12 bore. If you are looking straight at one when it goes off at less than 20 yards your eyes will go funny for a bit :w00t: In general, i would say not suitable for your average suburban back garden!

  12. My feeling is that they want his skills rather than just the contacts, and as a multi-multi-million £ company that already owns controls subsidiaries they wish to avoid being 1/2 owners of a deadlocked company. They are willing to provide funding themselves, even going so far as to offer free office space in one of their premises. No funding required from our side.

It all sounds a little too good, but then I know he's damned good at his job and even with a margin added he can still supply them at a very competitive price.

If it was me I'd jump in with both feet, but I'm like that. I wish I'd done an MBA when I was smart enough.

OK so no funding from your side. Even so the margin he makes will be split 49/51 so he will only get half of it. And pay his own stamp and taxes. And no guaranteed income. And presumably no opportunity to supply customers other than the parent company? You are right, it does sound too good to be true, but only for the company not the relative. Why do they not offer him a proper job buying direct for them and avoid the margin altogether? Is it because they would have to pay him a proper salary and put him on the books? Hard to say without lots more detail but my first, second and third questions would be, "whats in it for them?"

  13. Not an expert but I have read something about cloud backups using masses of data if you haven't got the settings right...might be worth a google if you are keeping movies/music and apps in the sky as well as on the phone...

  14. How much notice did you give? Anything more than a week gives them plenty of time to fill the room, less than that and I sort of see their point. 2 months is ridiculous though. Are there any other wedding guests that might like to take on the room ? Must be plenty of people like me who leave it too late to book a room then find themselves in a travelodge 30 miles away...

  15. Had to share this:

"The Greek protest vote goes to neo-nazis, the Italian protest vote to an anarchist comedian, the British protest vote goes to an ex-stockbroker called Nigel.

What an extraordinarily sensible country we really are."
