  5. yes thats from the oil.. the darker the oil the darker the colour of the blade
  6. What steel did you use for #4, it looks like it's an old saw blade or something similar. Where do you get the steel for your knives There's a good series on Youtube for anyone else interested in making their own... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5ysKd1cswlo Nial. the steel from the 4th knife is the same as the others but when i heat treated it i didnt polish it , and i put file work all round the knife from the tip to the start of the blade
  7. Ditto the first knife in the picture was a kit i got i just made the handles it was a nice knife but the steel wasnt brilliant ... the other knifes are 4 ml high carbon steel the same as the ray mears knifes with these i do the entire knife myself so i can do more or less any shape / length i choose

  11. I've bought myself a pair of English Walnut scales to make the handles, I wanted to go with something with a nice looking grain, they should look really good when they are oiled. You should give it a go mate, so far it's been quite easy to get to this point. Better to make something yourself that will last instead of buying one. I did think that to but the way the metal is heated has a lot to do with how brittle it is. When I first heated up the file I heated it up to 800 degrees or bright orange then let it cool gradually in the forge. This heating and cooling process creates carbon on the outside of the metal which makes it easy to work and more pliable. I think this is when the metal is at it's most brittle. I don't know if it would shatter but it could snap if it was put under enough strain or stress. When I heat up the knife again when all the filing and grinding has been done it again gets heated up to 800 degrees or till it's bright orange then it gets plunged straight in to old motor oil to cool it very quickly. This process creates carbite on the outside of the metal which is what gives it it's strength. With any luck this should insure the blade wont shatter. when you heat treat it test it against a magnet when the steel becomes non magnetic thats it done to 800 degrees
  12. just a design i thought i would try came out ok i think... It looks great, but those wee recesses not just get filled with crud when it's used? Nial. i have never had any trouble with other knifes but after i use them i always clean my gear be it gun / knife / stove anything realy the design is only surface scratches realy so any dirt can be wiped of
