  1. I don't have a recall problem he comes in very well to the recall whistle. He retrieves dummies well but will not bring them right to hand, he just runs around with it about an arms length away and just seems to show off with it. I have tried backing off from him, crouching right down so as not to be intimidating but nothing seems to get him closer than that arms length away, it's very fustrating.

I have always been very careful to never snatch anyhthing from the dog as I know this can cause problems, so I'm really not sure how to proceed.

  2. Just need a few pointers if anyone has any.

I have a 5 month old cocker whichI have been training using Joe Irving's book. He is a keen retriever and I have only been giving him one or two retrieves every other day. Recently he has taken to not bringing the dummy back to hand, instead he seems to play with it and seems reluctant to bring it in to hand. Does any one have any suggestions as to cure this problem or will he just grow out of it as he gets older?

    Cheers for any help

  3. All,

Just found the answer to my own question on the HSE website, looks like it was banned in 2003!!

    Quote from the HSE

"This means that, as of 30 April 2003, retailers are no longer able to sell creosote to the general public, and as of 30 June 2003, the general public are no longer able to use wood preservatives that contain creosote/coal tar creosote. Where retailers still have stocks of amateur use creosote products after 30 April, they should contact their supplier in the first instance, or their local waste regulatory authority. If members of the public have creosote after the 30 June 2003 they should contact their local council for advice on disposal."

  4. Just need a bit of help.

Now I know you can no longer buy creosote unless you are a farmer or contractor and buy gallons of the stuff. But my question is, are you still able to use it on domestic fencing, if you are lucky enough to have some knocking around. I.e. it's not illegal or anything?

    Thanks

  5. Do we have any stickmakers on here ? i want to commission a stick as a present for my dad in time for crimbo if possible ?

Just a thought, why not buy the bits you need and make one yourself for the personal touch? It's not that difficult, if I can do it any one can. :good:

  6. All,

Went out yesterday for a few hours on the rape stubble with my brother and the two boys. We managed 20 but lost 2, one in the wood and one in standing wheat. A good day out and both the lads enjoyed themselves, the youngest has never been before and seemed to enjoy it. (Not sure about a yellow T shirt for cammo but there you go!)

Usually a good afternoon out, especially if the sun shines

  8. My old chap has a live catch trap he puts by his bird table and just uses bird nuts in it. He must be close to 30 squirrels now, he had another 2 on Saturday.

Don't worry about transferring them to a sack to dispatch them, just shoot them in the trap with your air rifle, (tip it on its end so they have less room to run up and down) much less chance of getting bitten!!

  9. Hello All,

I have just got myself a cocker pup from very good working lines and as it is my first gundog I would like some opinions on a book that I could buy to help me with training it.

    All opinions gratefully received.

    Thanks in advance

  10. Meh, I don't think what your saying is fair.

They get a call out that someone is shooting squirrels with an airgun - it can either be an old bloke completly innocent, or a bunch of ***** who got hold of a 7ft-lb plinking rifle taking unsafe pot-shots.

    Bleeh,

Perhaps I didn't express myself clearly, they did not come round about the air rifle, they came round to make sure my Dad was 'disposing of trapped squirrels properly' If they suspected a crime was being committed why did they not bring an officer of the law? Do they perhaps see themselves as enforcing the law of the land now?? After all when all is said and done the 'inspectors' are only MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC working for a CHARITY

Interested in anyoune else's thoughts on this matter

  11. All,

My Dad (whose nearly 70 )has been cage trapping a few grey squirrels in his garden that have been making a nuisance of themsleves round his bird feeder's.

You know the score emptying them out and ripping the mesh and generally being annoying. Well today, my Mom went to answer a knock at the door and found herself facing 2 RSPCA 'inspectors', who said they had been made aware that squirrels were being trapped and wanted to know 'how he disposes of the caught ones' (Which he does by shooting them with an air rifle incidentally)

My Dad not knowing any better and being a law abding citizen, (which I don't believe he actually HAD to do by law, as the RSPCA have no legal rights) let them in to his garden and showed them his trap and his air rifle!!! Apparently they then went away satisfied after asking my Dad why he didn't like squirrels!!!!

Has anyone else had an experience like this one?

ps about 2 hours after the RSPCA had been round, my Dad caught a squirrel that had been avoiding the trap for a couple of days!!

pps The visit was yesterday and he had another squirrel this morning!!!!
