  1. use a fishing brolly with a net over the top and learn to shot sitting down. as long as you have done your homework and the birds are still playing then they will try to land in your pattern. you dont need all the room above you, just the theater in front.

i have shot many many a time like this and had fantastic days.

I have to agree, spot on. :good:

  2. I have been shooting a few years but never had a double magpie, set up yesterday afternoon got a few pigeons and I heard a magpie in the woods behind me I was just about to pull the trigger on a woody when I spotted a magpie not one but two comming over my right side, turned the gun round and bang bang got them both, I could not belive it I was really chuffed with myself first of many I hope.

  3. farmer phoned 2 day and told me he has a field off peas that he can"t do 2 wet so should get some good days has anyone else had same  might need a hand

Heard about it but never been in this situation, like Motty says you should be in for some big bags, good luck mate.

  4. :good:

We'll soon turn you. You'll be having pigeon sarnies before you know it.

Have you got kids? If so, I think you should invest in extra security, such as trigger locks and a separate safe for your cartridges. You want to show her that you're being sensible and taking every precaution to ensure no one but you can access anything dangerous.

If not, just both go to a clay ground, spend £50 on a lesson and hopefully you can prove yourself to be a safe person to have one at home.

Stick your location in your profile and those who are near you are normally keen to help if you really need it.

    Spot on mate :good:

  5. went out for a woodie session on some stubble sunday good chance to dust off the shottie and give the new pup some work

set up the deeks and the rotary had my first cuppa and a few give me a look but dont come in  change the deek set out same thing happens, take the ratary away and one comes in and i miss it :good: then another :good: then another :hmm: now i am getting mad with myself for doing so much Rifle work and no shottie so i decide I am not swinging through but not sure how to make my head work to resolve it, a few shots later we have one and pup is sent for a retrieve and just as she gets there it takes off and makes it over the field so i have to call the pup back! and so the farce continued by the time rain set in I was 17 shots for 2 woodies and a crow and i cant remember having shot so bad (ever) whilst its very frustrating it just shows we dont always get 100 plus bags and sometimes we can make a right hash of things........ with luck i have paid for my sins and the next outing will be more fruitful

Went out Sat 4 hours 10 shots 1 yes 1 pigeon, tried it all got flask out, went for a pee changed deek paterns etc nothing worked  like the song things can only get better :hmm:

  6. You could well be spot on. I had a dozen out and know what you mean. I had birds flaring over the pattern and went to have a look suspecting a bird belly-up but it was just a large number of shot birds around the pattern.

My youngest son DoubleTap was 500 yards away with 8 birds (mainly flocked shells!) in his pattern and the birds poured in for him.

My 2 flightlines were leaving the field over me into the sun yet DoubleTap was getting the return flight in the centre of the field with the sun behind them.

Oh the joys of pigeon shooting..............too many ifs and buts.

I will stick with a small amount of decoys and hope my luck changes, once again well done.

  7. well got all me gear loaded up in my wheel barrow and at 12.00 of i went out the back gate and down the field walking along the meadow with my wheel barrow and i saw a good flight line so set my gear up,

after about 30 mins of setting up i had my first shoot and missed (how i missed really dont know)

then the farmer came in the field in the biggist tracter with a drill so i dashed out to move my gear he drives up the field waves and keeps going so i think should i set up or not he gets to the end and turns round comes back and ****s of (strange)

so i set back up had the odd bird but i could see up the next field the pigeons were feeding so i decide to move

    40mins later ive moved

set my gear up in a horse shoe with floaters and magnet and the birds just fly past great i thought so get my luch box out and **** me they came in 2 here 4 there 2 more there then all went still and then i see why my local buzzard floating about for about half hour then goes

pigeons start again this point im thinking i need shooting lessons keep missing lol

so then comes 5,30 and i pack up and start pushin my barrow home then i spot two magpies so i ditch the barrow in the hedge got me gun out its sling and sat in a bush and there came sraight at me got one which was a result

high light of the day watching the buzzards floating it the wind now im only 24 and some people think that its strange a young lad to be enjoyin wildlife and shooting but i love it

only had 9 for all that hard work dont seam to beto many big groups but lots of seagulls

i did film the buzzards on my phone will up load later

I am 58 been shooting for years and I still get a buzz just sitting and watching the wildlife, I get an even bigger buzz if I shoot a few birds

  8. And a large town on the other side provided a steady supply of scabbys. (Ferals)

I found the birds to be quite decoy-shy and very few woodies actually committed and came in, despite me changing the pattern several times and using all dead birds.

The pattern did work by pulling birds off two flightlines to have a look but the rotary was an absolute no-no. I set it up and both flightlines dramatically shifted away from it.

Many thanks to Sir Les (Elby) for putting us on the pigeons yet again. He expertly placed all three of us under decent flightlines that were like pigeon motorways with two-way traffic. Awesome...................................The best pigeon guide in the area.

How many decoys did you use including shot birds? the pigeons round here spook if I use to many decoys I have been using 7-10 only, find they come close enough for a look but spook if to many out :good:

  9. Walking back to my car wed night the farmer asked how i had done, 12 in three hours i said, had a good three hours then he said, he has a good idea how many pigeons there are on his fields he has lived there all his life he would know if I was telling the truth or not, your farmers are not fools.

  10. Earlier today I was driving down a country lane and. coming round a bend, I saw what looked like a fairly large rabbit laying at the side of the road, just off the hedgeline. I parked up a little further on and walked back as I wanted to see if it was a rabbit or a hare (don't get many down here).

As it turns out it was a rabbit. I nudged it with my foot to see how fresh or stiff it was and was surpirsed when it opened it eyes and somewhat weakly thrashed about on the floor on its side. Thinking it had been hit by a vehicle I picked it up by its hind legs to do the decent thing with it and put it out of it's misery. It thrashed about a bit more and have to confess I dropped it. I picked it up round the middle to see if it was injured. Nothing obvious. I felt it's legs, back & front and all seemed ok there. No breaks that I can say I felt or it responded to. Eyes were clear & bright, no sign of mixy or any infection on that front. There was a rip down one of its ears from the top to over half way down but other than that it seemed to be in good condition. Had a quick look at its teeth, they seemed ok and in fact would have thought it was this years early brood (or last years at latest). It's breathing was very shallow & fairly quick. It's belly looked somewhat empty, like it hadn't eaten in a while but other than that everythin else seemed ok.

Anyway, I lay it back down for a bit and watched as it's eyes closed. I picked it up and swiftly dispatched it. Like to think it went quick but I'm puzzled as to what this rabbit could have been suffering from. As I say, no marks on its coat to indicate any injuries so wondered if you guys may have a possible explaination.

    Regards,

    Doc.

Skin the rabbit and have a look for bruising or small puncture marks made by a pellet or something of that nature around the lung area
